Increasing poll rate of a PS/2 touchpad?

Hello,
I'm having a hard time getting touchpad in my ancient Satellite L300 to work properly. The poll rate is annoyingly low (43Hz according to evhz). Of course there's an article on Arch wiki on setting the poll rate, but it applies only to USB devices. I know the touchpad supports a higher poll rate because it feels way smoother on Windows and interestingly on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as well. It lags on any other distro I tried.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Since it works well in old Ubuntu versions it should theoretically be possible to make it work in Arch, but I have no idea how.

After a search and some digging, I found this:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … arch-linux
There are a few solutions there that might work.
