Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

I'm trying to install Arch Linux on my dad's Lenovo Ideapad(?) B575

Everything went well with the installation, but the startup and shutdown times are not great - about 1 minute each way.

I took a picture of the error messages because I'm not sure how to get them otherwise.  I ran the picture through a text extractor; so, apologies in advance for any mistakes.

That is a first.  A+ for thinking outside the box.
Might I suggest one of these: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … in_clients ?  Personally, I use wgetpaste.  Pipe your output through it, and it will give you a url link to the text.  Just post that link here.

What are the output of systemd-analyze blame   ?

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

I missed the part about the text extractor the first time I read this, which one did you use? It seems to have done a decent enough job.

Your disk seems to be fine but more info might be useful, such as full dmesg output after booting, 'lspci -nnk' and 'smartctl -x /dev/sdX'. If you can shutdown properly maybe some of the messages (but not all) are on the journal, you could try 'journalctl -b -1' and see if any messages show up, if they do post that too.

By looking at the line "[933.356136] ata2: SError: PHYRdyChg CommWake 1068B DeuExch" and cross checking here I might be inclined to say it could be a connection problem, such as bad cable or sata port, which in a laptop is not easy to debug. After we get to see the full logs maybe more people will chime in a provide ideas or be able to narrow down the problem due to previous experience.

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

I might add that the culprit seems to be the optical disk, not the hard drive.

Yeah I was decently impressed.  I had to fix a couple of closing brackets.

I'll take a look at the rest of the suggestions when I get home.  Thanks guys!

Yeah, I've been a little worried about it being a bad connector.  The transition to Linux was meant to be a way of breathing new life into this laptop so it would be a shame for the board to be fubared.

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

I've got an update on this.

I pulled out the DVD drive (ata2) and it had no effect.

I then pulled out the HDD and replaced it with the SSD from my personal laptop and it booted up in seconds.

Looks like the laptop's connectors are fine but something is up with the disk.

Going to see if I have another disk laying around.
I'll mark this [SOLVED]
I guess it's not solved.  Check next posts.

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

Well this is getting weirder by the day.

As I mentioned, replacing the HDD with my main computer's SSD causes the laptop to behave beautifully.  Shutdown finishes in less than 5 seconds.

So, I suspected that the drive was bad.  I tried dd-ing the HDD to another HDD I had laying around.  With this new HDD, I still had the errors from my first post.

I thought maybe something was wrong with the disk image so I completely wiped the new drive (

dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda

) and started fresh.

I installed Windows 8 and Arch on the freshly wiped disk and I used the rEFInd boot loader this time instead of GRUB.

Still, I'm getting the same errors.

The easy solution would be to grab an SSD but I don't really want to dump money into this machine.

If anyone else has any suspicions about why this would be happening, specifically for magnetic HDDs, I'd love to know.

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

Check on dmesg at which speed the sata link synchronizes with the ssd and with the hard disk, maybe there is a difference there. Also check the output of 'hdparm -I /dev/sda' and compare the list of supported capabilities between the ssd and hd. Check the bios/uefi setup for any options related to the sata ports.

Make absolutely sure that you don't have any daemons or settings changing the default power management settings, you want to remove as many variables as possible from the problem.

No other ideas here.

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

Still working on this.
For my reference and possibly others in the future, this sounds like it's Lenovo's fault.

Re: Hanging on Shutdown - ata# softreset failed

I think this is a bug with Kernel 4.8.4 and above.

My works PC, a Dell Precision T1700 started doing this every time it shuts down since this kernel revision.

Unfortunately, that is all the investigation I have done so far....!

00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation SATA Controller [RAID mode] (rev 04)

Doesn't work in AHCI mode either.

Edit: I am also using a magnetic disk, but don't have an SSD lying around to try to confirm it is infact the same bug.
