[SOLVED]Sound balance wrong after update (e.g. inaudible human voices)

After a recent update the sound balance is completely wrong. For example, human voices are barely audible or even scrambled. I tested some music files, and instrumentals seem to be fine but voices are not. To be honest I don't have a clue where to begin troubleshooting the issue, hopefully someone can help me out.

I tested several applications and the problem persists across the board. I'm running PulseAudio. I did try rebooting (since the kernel got updated) but it didn't change anything.

Seems "center channel" is gone, it usually happens when there is a short crcuit.
Are you sure all of the jacks and cables are right?

Thanks, replacing a cable did work. It's quite curious that the apparent short circuit happened exactly at the same time as the system upgrade.
