Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1

I can't pinpoint when this started but right now I can't launch a couple of things due to this error.

Most notably and annoying are the AirVPN app (yes, I am already using Network Manager instead) and VMware.

It seems everytime some program needs gksu this error happens and I can't find any reason why.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=206743 > this post talks about Xauthority but I checked every file and I can't find any with that changed.

I'm logging in automatically into Gnome3 but I honestly don't remember how I set it up... this installation is 3 years old and there's lots of bit rot, but right now I can't do a fresh install and would like to solve this problem instead

Which is likely gnome on wayland then, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1274451

=> configure gdm to not automagically log you in and on login choose "gnome on xorg". gnome/wayland has still several glitches.
