Do you mean only the volume control or the integration of the media player as well?
Have you tried xfce4-mixer?

Just have to right-click on the panel, then Add elements or something like that (I am not under xfce anymore, sorry), and then you should find the volume control applet within the list. But I find it rather strange you haven't it by default. Could you describe your software config ?

Personally I was never able to find an integration of the media player as in Ubuntu.
However, for Rhythmbox I used rhythmbox-tray-icon from the AUR and I was quite happy with it.
For Banshee or others I don't know what to advise...
