HP Officejet Pro 8610 stops working

My father has an issue with his printer ocationaly won't print, and have to reinstall the printer.
I have the same kind of printer, but don't have the problem.
The differences between his and my setup is that he has XFCE and I run i3wm. Both has Arch Linux installed updated today.

First of all:
Does anyone know this issue, and know how to solve it?

If not:
What should I do, troubleshooting this? (how to print logfiles, what logfiles should I print, etc)

Any help would be great.

I ran a hp-check and the output was:

[01mNote: hp-check can be run in three modes:[0m
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Done.

I have seen some missing dependencies, but as I see it, those are optional. After reinstall, the output of hp-check is the same, as I can see. (I should maybe run a comparrison on those two outputs?)
I suspect maybe cups is falling out, or the printer queue is ruined somehow.

And please tell me what you need to help me troubleshooting smile

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8610 stops working

I have the same printer and have no issues as well. Out of curiosity, is it possible the IP address of the printer is changing? Personally, I use DHCP, but go into my router and make the router always assign the same IP to the printer. That stopped me from having to re-add the printer occasionally.

I have tried both static and dynamic IP, without any difference in behaviour. That is a known issue in Windows aswell, printer disconnects if it has dynamic IP.

Do you know where I can find log-file for cups and hplip? I'm pretty shure that one of those is the problem...

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8610 stops working

I also use this printer, and installation was easy, with avahi and hplip.
There was one issue, when i selected the printer driver, there were 4 entries for hp8610.
Only one of them is correct, the first two are older drivers. The last two had the same name, but only one of those two entries made the printer work. I will find out what the name of the driver is.
Avahi might help with the changing IP.

EDIT: driver is hpcups (en,en)

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8610 stops working

My father has an issue with his printer ocationaly won't print, and have to reinstall the printer.

If the printer is off or not connected to the network for some reason when he tries to print, CUPS may disable that queue. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … _a_problem

The wiki describes how to adjust the log level and where the CUPS log is stored.
