I have virtualbox 5.1.8 with extensions installed on a up to date Arch xfce4 host
speaker-test -c 2 -t wav
Plays fine the first time I run it on the Arch host.
The same command hangs in an Arch Guest. I hear a sound for a second then nothing.
Then when I run the speaker-test in the Arch host again I get the following error.
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1041:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
When I close the guest the host plays audio fine again.
This same Arch guest works on a Fedora 23 virtualbox 5.1.8 host
The cards in my laptop are Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 and NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 755M]
I have played with;
/etc/asound.conf
~/asound.conf
/etc/pulse/default.pa
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
When nothing worked I removed my changes.
A qemu client plays sounds fine with the -soundhw ac97 option.
I look forward to getting this to work.
Thanks.

The last update of both virtualbox from 5.1.8 to 5.1.10 and Linux Kernel from 4.8.9 to 4.8.10 fixed my sound problem.
Is just adding [SOLVED] to the title enough?
Should I just delete this whole question since the update fixed it?

Report your first post in this thread, and request deletion in the report. As there is no "solution" other than to update to a later version of the software then it's a good candidate to dustbin.
