I recently upgraded to Minecraft 1.11. I got a warning that in the future I'll need Java 8. OK, fair enough. I installed jre8-openjdk and swapped environments with archlinux-java.
After doing so, while Minecraft no longer complains about using an old version of Java, the launcher cannot connect to the internet. Switching environments back to jre7-openjdk fixed the connectivity issue but obviously isn't a long term fix as I like to play on the snapshot versions, future ones which might require Java 8.
What would be causing this? What to try?

In the next year Java 9 rolls out — you should not even consider still having 7.
Minecraft is non-libre, hence I can only make blind guesses; but to do so at least some information is needed. Could you provide the logs?
