I followed the guide here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware and installed VMware-Player-3.1.6-744570.i386.bundle
When I try to run vmplayer it crashes with the following output:
$ vmplayer
No value set for `/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility'
No value set for `/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility'
/usr/bin/vmplayer: line 35: 10790 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Player" --icon="vmware-player"

That looks like an old version of vmware-player,have you tried the vmware-patch package as suggested ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

stracing a bash script is close to pointless - in case the update doesn't work, gdb or strace the segfaulting vmware-modconfig call.
