If once I close the lid, then my laptop suspends in a few seconds

If once I close the lid and then open it, then my laptop Samsung N150 plus suspends in a few seconds. Then every time I start it again it suspends in a few seconds.  But if I NEVER close the lid, then it works normally without suspending.

Looking in this old thread
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=178047
I set "HandleLidSwitch" to ignore in /etc/systemd/logind.conf and this works as a workaround.

Just wonder if it is possible to get suspend working normally

logind.conf works through systemd, however most desktop environments like xfce/gnome/kde have their own settings to override systemd. You may also use acpid.

Thanks. I do not have a real desktop environment installed, just Awesome. Laptop is old and only 2GB RAM. I want to keep it minimal.  Regarding acpid, do you think it is the smaller option that can fix suspend?

This guide seems to teach what you are suggesting: https://blog.omgmog.net/post/making-sus … mebook-11/
Do you mean something like that?

Maybe your lid switch is broken, put suspend on ignore, close/open the lid and check what events you get with acpi_listen (part of the acpid package)

thanks, I installed acpid, but am getting this:

[franz@localhost ~]$ acpi_listen
acpi_listen: can't open socket /var/run/acpid.socket: No such file or directory
[franz@localhost ~]$

Did you start the acpid service?

No, but now I got it

Alad wrote:

I get:
button/lid LID close
button/lid LID open

So it seems confirmed that lid switch works and it is reasonable because when I close the lid and logind.conf is default it DOES suspend and this can happen only if the switch works.

Ok, but why after the first lid closure/opening something mysterious is automatically activated so that it suspends in a few seconds even if lid is open?

Re: If once I close the lid, then my laptop suspends in a few seconds

Couple of thoughts:

- You are not running a DE which will override systemd's configuration, so you do have to configure systemd to do what you want.
- You are starting to add more variables to the mix, so you have to make sure only one thing is trying to act on lid switch changes at any point in time. This includes systemd and any other laptop power saving daemons or configurations you may have done.

humm...  sydtemd default option is to suspend when lid is closed. And this works by default when I close the lid.  So I understand it is already configured.  The fact that after  10-20 seconds after I open again the lid it goes in suspension alone seems a bug to me.

Resuming:
start the laptop > everything works and no unwanted suspend happens indefinitely
I close the lid > it goes in suspension mode correctly
I open the lit > it resumes correctly and works, but after a few seconds in goes again in suspension for no reason
I resume from suspension and it works again for some seconds before going again automatically in suspension
I have to reboot to e able to work again

I only have systemd and installed acpid after here  Alad suggested to test it

Re: If once I close the lid, then my laptop suspends in a few seconds

You don't have any other configuration changes or daemons installed and running, such as tlp or similar?

Most probably you want to start taking things out of the equation, such as not running any DE/WM and disabling as many services (that you have enabled) as you can. You should also post your systemd and any other relevant configuration files for people to take a look at.

Also make sure to search the forum (and the web) for any similar problems and the respective solutions, they might not provide a solution to your exact problem but may provide things you can try to find how where the problem lies.

Configurations are default, I touched nothing because do not want problems. I do not even have installed something that tells me if battery is discharging.

I already searched the web and only useful thing I found is to put lid event to ignore as I already wrote.  So I'll keep it this way and hell to suspend. I'll just shutdown instead of suspending and there is nothing wrong with that. I was too much ambitious.

Anyway thanks to all you that tried to help me.  I understand it is not easy.

Before you go, we have not really discussed the journal and dmesg.  Any information in the logs (journalctl -b ) or kernel ring buffer (dmesg)

This is before closing the lid that triggers the problems

Re: If once I close the lid, then my laptop suspends in a few seconds

Finally I tried to follow the guide that I posted in the third post of this thread and it worked when "HandleLidSwitch" is set to ignore in /etc/systemd/logind.conf.

For me this means that suspend provided by systemd is bugged while suspend provided by pm-utils works. Possibly nobody is interested in that because, as Doctobroke wrote above: "most desktop environments like xfce/gnome/kde have their own settings to override systemd". In fact I found other threads with exactly the same problem.

If you think this is a solution I can mark the thread as "solved", to me it seems more a workaround than a solution, but at least it works now. I just hope that some future upgrades will not break Pm-utils compatibility.

Regarding my long post of the logs, I am sorry, but really looked for some GUI to post code as find in every forum, but nothing appears on my screen.

Best
