Any good tool for test-building dist tarballs?

I have my own autotools project. To create a distribution tarball I type

make dist

which creates a tarball.

I have found it is good practice to attempt a build from the tarball, just to check that everything has been packaged properly. It is laborious to keep doing this manually. Is there a tool to automate this?
