AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Hello,

today i got my ATI RX 460. I bought it because it supports HEVC_MAIN_10 with VDPAU. So i plugged it in my Computer, installed the required packages that are given in the wiki page of amdgpu and set the driver in my xorg.conf. After a reboot i noticed that im not able to take my 3840x2160 Resolution with a refresh rate of 60.
The xrandr output looks like

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-A-3 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1280mm x 720mm

   3840x2160 30.00 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98
   1920x1080i 60.00 50.00 59.94
   1600x1200 60.00
   1680x1050 59.88
   1400x1050 59.95

   1280x960 60.00
   1280x800 59.91
   1280x720 60.00 50.00 59.94
   1024x768 60.00
   800x600 60.32
   720x576 50.00
   720x576i 50.00
   720x480 60.00 59.94
   720x480i 60.00 59.94
   640x480 60.00 59.94
   3840x2160_60.00 59.98
DVI-D-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The last mode with 3840x2160_60 was added with xrandr but it gives me only a black screen when i try to use it.
So i thought lets look if it works in windows 7. And it did. Then i exported the edid.bin from windows and added it to my xorg.conf. No success. The next thing i tried was to add it to my grub config and run grub-mkconfig. Rebooted and again no 3840x2160_60 possible. Only a Refresh Rate of 30. Thats working from the beginning.

Here ist my Xorg.0.log

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Connect it over a DisplayPort port.

I saw similar issues with my Dell UP2516D when connected over HDMI. Only 1920x1080@59,95 8-bit color, or 2048x1080@59,95 8-bit colour. Both with limited RGB colour range of 16-235, instead of full RGB. Linux probably assumes that HDMI is for TVs.
And of course as usual with these issues, in Windows it displayed 2560x1440@59.95 and 10-bit per colour.

When connected through a DP port, Linux immediately selected 2560x1550@59.95 with 8-bit colour.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Well i try to connect my TV with the GPU. And there is no DisplayPort in the TV. Is there any other possibility to get it working. I mean with my nvidia card it works over HDMI. Is there maybe another way to force a custum edid file?

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

From the command line try :

xrandr –output HDMI-A-3 –mode 3840x2160_30.00

Then :

xrandr

And check in the table output (of port HDMI-A-3) that :
(1) the table heading starts with "HDMI-A-3 connected primary 3840x2160+0+0 ....."
(2) the asterisk character is next to the refresh rate of the 4K resolution like this :

HDMI-A-3 connected primary 3840x2160+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1280mm x 720mm
   1920x1080 60.00+ 50.00 59.94 30.00 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98
   3840x2160 30.00* 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98

The asterisk character is always next to the current resolution+refresh.
The plus character is always next to the preferred resolution+refresh.

Also make sure that "1280mm x 720mm" are the true dimensions of your TV's panel. Or else the DPI will suffer.
Check in your TV's specs, or measure

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

I was going to work in a safe way towards permanently adding an undetected screen resolution with xrandr, and then xorg.conf. In your case 2160p@60Hz.
But since you're ignoring my last post, you're on your own though. Here is the way. : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xr … esolutions

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

I tried it now with several manual Modelines with xrandr and everytime i have more than 30hz the screen stays black. Maybe its a driver limitation? Unfortunally there is no amdgpu-pro driver for arch users...

Are you sure about that...

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Well today i installed an ubuntu on a usb drive to test the amdgpu-pro driver. And even there i have the same Problem. 4k only at 30hz. So i searched a bit around and found following website . Can or How can i apply this on my arch system?

edit: Applying the patch right now with help of the ABS Wiki Article smile Lets see if it will work

edit2: well even with the patch applied i can only get a refresh rate of 30 sad
Now xrandr looks like

3840x2160 30.00 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98 29.94 23.95

That was my last try.... I´ll go back to my Nvidia and wait for HEVC_10 support.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Same issue here: I cannot get an RX 460 going with 4K@60Hz. As soon as I try a custom mode line, both (!) the TV and the monitor connected via DisplayPort go black. After some time, the TV recovers (still in 30Hz, though), but the monitor does not and stays black until I kill X.
Strange thing: There is even a detailed timing in the edid which should be 4K@60Hz (594,0 MHz clock) - but it is not reported in xrandr. And when I force those timings via --newmode ... see above.

Does somebody have an idea?

The cable is explicitly advertised to support 4k@60Hz. The TV is a Samsung KS8090 with UHD Color turned on for the used HDMI input.

It's slowly becoming a widespread issue. Even the Pro driver on Ubuntu is affected.

If you can, send it back. With no official driver support for Linux (other than buggy Ubuntu, RHEL, CentOS, and Suse drivers) and Ryzen imminent, AMD will have their priorities elsewhere.
I'm stuck with RX 480 8GB and RX 480 4GB cards.

I was waiting for Ryzen, but I'm not looking forward to the risk of (again) ending up with my dick in the AMD meat grinder.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Has anybody having this issue tried a kernel with the DAL/DC code added ?

If not, try the linux-amd-staging kernel package in Lordheavy mesa-git repo .

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

I'm all in favour of workarounds to get going. But how wise is it to run a DC enabled kernel ? It doesn't look like something to do as a long term solution.
I read this linked Phoronix blog article early December, and it looks like a non bridgeable disagreement between Linux kernel developers and AMD is in the making.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

There are several good reasons to try out a linux-amd-staging-47  DC enabled kernel to find out if that solves the issue.

- the DAL/DC code is supposed to allow the linux amd open source driver to support every configuration the amd driver on other OSes supports.
If this code doesn't support 3840x2160 60 Hz , it might very well be a problem shared by all amd drivers.

- the maintainer , agdf seems to be one of the most experienced X / mesa developers

- some AL users are running the amd-staging-47 kernel with great results wrt performance and stability .

Have you read the comments thread for that article ?
In it,  bridgman (the amd dev that's very active on phoronix) seems to think it's a lot less bad then many think and it can be solved.

TL;DR : using amd-staging-47 + DC code is by far the best chance to use this mode

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

I'm only worried about the long term of DC. Because it looks like a little trench war is going on between 2 camps with completely opposite plans and ideas.
I'm not worried about the benefits of DC.

[off-topic]
Me personally, I give it until the end of the month and without improvement (drivers and trench war) I will put 2 red lemons up for sale.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

OK, so the basic answer for the question: "Why doesn't 4K@60Hz work with RX 460?", is: Because the current driver does not support it. Right? (What is the stage of the amdgpu driver that currently comes with the kernel anyway - if the current one is not in there yet?)

I read through the discussion on the mailing list. I think they will figure it out - but not very fast. Unitl then, we will need to use some alternative, i.e. use the AMD driver outside of the standard kernel...

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

Update: Finally I had the time to try the DC-enabled kernel (linux-amd-staging) and MESA provided by Lordheavy as Lone_Wolf suggested - thanks for the hint.
It has still some glitches (had a few hangs when switching modes, tearing in videos etc.), but basically it works. I can use the TV with 4K@60Hz now.
This is all very ... testing, but hopefully things will be getting more stable in a while.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

I recently spent some time working around this issue, and would like to support the suggestions of gurkensalat and Dr Bibber, namely that:

- HDMI output doesn't yet appear to be working in all cases for 4K at 60Hz on AMDGPU (or in my case, also AMDGPU + amd-staging DC/DAL enabled kernel)
and that:
- DisplayPort output does seem to work, and can output to HDMI TVs with an appropriate adapter (in my case, Club3D CAC-1070 does the job)

Got a RX480 and a cheap 4K TV that reports incorrect EDID info.
No luck via the HDMI output on any kernel I tried. Doesn't seem to work on either amd-staging-47 with DAL/DC, or latest AMDGPU in 4.10 RC6 (4k only works at 30Hz).

However, it only did the job after specifying a custom modeline in xorg.conf (probably because TV EDID was incorrect, displaying wrong screen modes). Now it works fine on 4.10 RC6, so doesn't require a DAL/DC-enabled kernel.

Got the right custom modeline details from the AMD gfx driver monitor settings from within Windows on the same hardware (AMD driver seemed to autodetect the 4K@60Hz) and adapted to the input format for xorg.conf / xrandr.

Because it worked fine using the HDMI out -> HDMI in on the TV in Windows, but not on AMDGPU with exactly the same monitor / HW settings, it would seem that AMDGPU is indeed probably not getting 4k@60hz right over HDMI (for now).

Hope this helps...

Actually, meanwhile it works quite well and stable with the DC-enabled kernel.
Although it turned out that I need it less often than expected: For many cases it is actually more practical to display photos and videos through DLNA directly on the TV.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

My 2 cards are going up for sale later today.
January has ended.
No generic Linux drivers. Just for Ubuntu, RHEL, CentOS, and SLED/SLES.
The DC enabled disagreement between AMD and Linux kernel devs hasn't been resolved.
To put insult to injury and financial damage (EUR 610 for 2 RX 480 cards with graphics glitches and crap performance) :
AMD is promoting Vega.
AMD is promoting Ryzen.
What a jokers. Never again.

I remember times when you could run new graphics hardware in VESA mode only for like a year until just mode setting and basic 2D acceleration became available.
Thus I will be patient enough to live with the work-around (linux-staging-amd) for some months until all functionality will be in the mainline kernel.

Re: AMDGPU + RX 460 = no 2160p_60?

It is a bit strange that the results are so inconsistent between different hardware / kernel / OS. The Windows driver had no problem autodetecting and displaying 4K@60Hz over HDMI without any additional work. Using exactly the same custom modelines for the screen (and attempting all sorts of other xorg.conf tweaks) had no result whatsoever over HDMI in Linux.
In my case it should be noted that the TV EDID is completely wrong (screen size, native resolution, manufacturer, etc) so that might well have something to do with the HDMI issue, despite my various attempts to work around the situation.
I'm using the screen for big spreadsheets and VMs among other things so I was relieved to at least get a result in the end (despite the otherwise unnecessary €30 or so for the Club3D DisplayPort adapter), not least because 30Hz was far too slow to use comfortably.

In general, it does seem somewhat unimpressive that AMD are stalling to this extent on Linux driver support. Presumably AMD resources are mostly focused on reworking AMDGPU to adjust to upstream kernel requirements. Otherwise, the state of the AMDGPU-Pro driver does not compare well to the closed-source nVidia offering on Linux, which seems to "just work" (except when it doesn't, whereby it can cause a xorg-related headache... hence the appeal of AMDGPU in upstream for my RX480 purchase this time round).
Lack of effective Linux driver support for HDMI audio ~6 months after release of their latest and greatest graphics hardware is a bit surprising. It seems that the AMDGPU-Pro driver doesn't even yet support the latest Ubuntu 16.10 released in October with 4.8 kernels.

Having said that, after many hours of troubleshooting, adapter purchase and settings tweaking, this RX480 is working well enough with AMDGPU now on up-to-date kernels over DisplayPort. But rather a lot of hassle to set up!

That is exactly the point: Works out of the box - except when it doesn't. Then you're lost. So I prefer to wait for open source drivers in the kernel a little longer.

cacofonix wrote:

I just tried it once - but audio over both HDMI and DisplayPort basically worked. I had some crackling, but that seemed related to PulseAudio (which is a real pain in certain body parts).

Yes, AMD's history repeats itself. Over and over. Same old. Same old.

Promoting new products when they barely (can) provide the minimum to be expected support (stable and fast drivers) for existing products of just moths old.

All points that I mentioned will repeat again for Vega.

I can only hope to find 1 or 2 suckers to by these 2 unsupported cards from me.
