Encoding japanese

Why is it that the bookmark for a japanese page shows only squares in the bookmark menu, but shows ok in the title menu when its opened? This site has a katakana title (www.elufa.net). As for asahi shimbun however, the title displays like Asahi.com followed by several ?

Also I write a document in japanese with leafpad (scim/anthy), and if I type less xxx in mlterm i get a warning that it may be a binary file. I see it and a few kanji appear together with (82)(83)(15) aso. The numbers represent a character I guess. I didnt have this problem before in mandriva.

And how about japanese in aterm ? It used to work (also in mandriva).

Re: Encoding japanese

It's probably a fonts issue. Search for 'Japanese fonts' using the search function and you'll find results like this:
