OpenGL clients hang randomly with Xorg 1.19

Since I upgraded to Xorg 1.19, OpenGL clients seem to hang at random times.

I'm using an old radeon X1300 card (r300 gallium driver).

EDIT: I can reproduce this with my 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller and xf86-video-intel, so this is not a radeon specific issue.

EDIT: With glamor, I cannot reproduce this. On my radeon, I can either enable glamor through a Xorg configuration file, or use the modesetting driver, wich uses glamor for 2d acceleration. For my intel integrated graphics, I cannot test this, because it doesn't seem to support glamor (the error message talks about not enough instructions, or something like that).

I found two reliable ways to reproduce it.

1. Under openbox, run this bash script

for n in {0..20} ; do
	x=$(((n % 5) * 202))
	y=$(((n / 5) * 152))
	glxgears -geometry 200x150+$x+$y &
done

At least some, but most likely all clients will lock up.

2. Under twm, simply run glxgears, and drag the window around. glxgears will hang after dragging.

Reverting the following packages to their extra/ counterparts fixes the problem:

 extra/xf86-input-libinput extra/xorg-server extra/xf86-input-evdev extra/xf86-video-ati

I hope some other people can help test this issue and give additional information, so I can submit a proper bug report.

Re: OpenGL clients hang randomly with Xorg 1.19

Can you check if you are running dri3?

with something like:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep DRI3

Re: OpenGL clients hang randomly with Xorg 1.19

I seem to be using DRI2, but I believe my integrated graphics using xf86-video-intel uses DRI3.
I can reproduce the problem with both drivers.

Here is the DRI information for the radeon card:

$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep DRI
[    12.067] (II) RADEON(0): [DRI2] Setup complete
[    12.067] (II) RADEON(0): [DRI2]   DRI driver: r300
[    12.067] (II) RADEON(0): [DRI2]   VDPAU driver: r300
[    12.069] (==) RADEON(0): DRI3 disabled
[ 13.550] (II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0

Anything unusual in the logs?

Re: OpenGL clients hang randomly with Xorg 1.19

Please try with a xf86-video-ati-git pkg. This solved input freezes for me with my HD5450 card. The driver switches to glamor/DRI3 here that solved input freezes with EXA/DRI2 for me.

Note that I can reproduce this issue with both xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-intel, of which the latter uses DRI3.

You mean Xorg.0.log, or are there some additional logs I should look at?

Besides a few oddities like "PC Speaker" being added as an input device, I didn't find anything suspicious. In particular, nothing gets added to the logs when an OpenGL application locks up. I also checked dmesg, nothing suspicious there either.

Here is Xorg.0.log anyway:

Re: OpenGL clients hang randomly with Xorg 1.19

xorg-server 1.19.0-3 adds a patch "to fix some EXA crashes", but I tested it, and it had no effect on this issue.

It's not only ATI, there are lockups on Intel as well with the new X.org.

These bugs might be related, but the task you linked is describing X completely freezing, while the bug I'm experiencing is simply OpenGL clients freezing, while other applications and the X session itself remain intact.

EDIT: Oh, I realized you are using compton, which utilizes OpenGL (or utilizes DRM is some other way? I'm not 100% familiar with how the open source graphics stack works).

Can you try running your X session without the compositor? Do only OpenGL clients freeze in that case? (Make sure to turn off compositing in xfwm as well, if it's enabled. IIRC it has built-in compositing functionality. Or you could just try running a plain X session with openbox/twm, and try to reproduce the issue with the methods I've described in my original post.)

I also have Arch testing on an Nvidia desktop and laptop, and, on both machines, mpv and vlc show this OpenGL halting problem. I have Compton installed but don't use it. My window manager is awesome wm, run under lxdm-session.

somercet: Are you using EXA or GLAMOR acceleration?

I can't reproduce the freezes under GLAMOR.

Re: OpenGL clients hang randomly with Xorg 1.19

I've been getting freezes/lockups recently. Pretty sure it's a video driver/xorg issue ,because it only happens when I'm running an OpenGL application. The whole screen will freeze, and the computer wont take any keyboard input.
There are two types of freezes/lockups:
1. The whole screen is unresponsive and the computer doesnt take any keyboard inputs, but all non OpenGL applications continue to run (like a video, the audio just continues playing fine).
2. The whole screen is unresponsive and the computer doesnt take any keyboard inputs, plus it keeps repeating the last 1-2 seconds of any audio that was playing when it froze.
My logs dont really show anything.

I'm using an Nvidia Optimus laptop [i7 2670QM + GT 520MX], all packages are up-to-date.

Are you using a compositor? This forum post is about OpenGL clients hanging, not the whole system hanging. The only time the keyboard should be unresponsive is if you're running a compositing window manager, and that freezes.

Otherwise, I'm afraid we are talking about two different problems.

On an unrelated note, I am using a different graphics card now, so I can't reproduce this issue anymore.

I'm using XFCE with Xfwm4.

I believe Xfwm4 has optional compositing. The question is whether you have it enabled or not.

In any case, it looks like the bug tracker tickets relating to this issue have been closed, and the packages are out of Testing, so if you have an issue, I suggest you open a new thread.

Yes, I'm using compositing smile

One thing you can try is disable compositing, and see if you can reproduce this issue with compositing disabled.

If you can, then this and your issue are simply unrelated. Otherwise, there is possible relation.

In both cases, you should probably open a new thread in the appropriate place, which is probably not the Testing section, unless the related packages are [testing], and reverting them fixes your problem.
