Limitations when mouting with gvfs-mount

gvfs-mount allow to mount various filesystems; this is great. However, there are limitations; I do not know if I miss something or if it is a true limitation.

  • I can't specify the mountpoint; it is mounted on $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/gvfs/<directory> where <directory> depends of what is mounted in a way that I can only partially guess.

  • The mounted directory are only visible to the user who have mounted the directory. Even root can't see it. Moreover, I can't issue the gvfs-mount command as root.

It would be great if I could mount these directories in a more conventional way. That would allow amount other to specify them in /etc/fstab. This is something that is easy to do with other fuse file systems such as sshfs (with you pass the correct option, for example "allow_other"). What I am interested in now is to mount a regular ftp filesystem, but this is obviously interesting for other filesystems too. A Google search gives me no answer, maybe it is not possible at all?

Update: I see that there is /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-ftp involved, but I have no clue how to use it directly nor what exactly this utility does (maybe it is not destinated to be used directly).
