Extremely embarassing question

I have arch installed (0 7.2), and have x, xfce, guarddog, etc running.
I have searched and read wiki, man pages, web sites for a answer so will finally ask here smile
After installing the base system, how does a person new to arch know what packages to install with pacman to get X and a desktop installed?
If I want a nice basic editor, what do I look for?
If I install x, how do I know what else is needed or the names of packages needed (ati/nvidia)?

If the answer is right in front of me, sorry for missing it smile

Thanks, and I really like the speed of arch. It's nice.

Re: Extremely embarassing question

X

pacman -Sy xorg

Nvidia

pacman -Sy nvidia-utils nvidia

xfce:

pacman -Sy xfce4*

Also  use the pacman search features for finding pacages:

pacman -Ss <pacman>

Re: Extremely embarassing question

You can do a package search in one of two ways - web search at www.archlinux.org, or pacman search on the command line:

pacman -Ss <keyword>

In either case, the keyword doesn't have to be a complete package name, so you can search for 'editor', 'nvidia', etc.

And if you need a nice and basic editor, you might want to check out gedit.

For packages, if you cannot find what you're looking for, go to http://aur.archlinux.org/

There you can find user-contributed packages, as well as a bit of introduction on how to use the files provided :-)

Thanks everybody.
I had trouble with cups till I found info on the wiki about ghostcript and d/ling the driver from linuxprinting.
Just some things for a arch newbie to figure out and learn smile

Haha, sounds like you're starting out with Arch the same way I did, you'll get use to it and be able to start configuring by hand like a mad man wink
