Cannot switch users (Gnome3 and GDM)

I've been searching for a while and haven't been able to find anything exactly like what I'm experiencing.

My machine boots into GDM just fine, and I can log in to either one of my user accounts. However, I cannot use switch to the other user after logging in to one. I have to restart my computer. If I do try to login to the other user, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then goes back to GDM.

Any help appreciated.

What does your journal have to say about the failed login?

Mod note: moving to NC.

Re: Cannot switch users (Gnome3 and GDM)

Are you using an Nvidia graphics card with proprietary drivers? I had the same issue switching users (with an Nvidia graphics card), and this seemed to do the trick: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … _Xorg_1.16

In short, just make a config file at

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

with the contents:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

After adding the config file and restarting, switching users worked fine.

Known issue with gnome on wayland (search the forum)
Should work if you select gnome on xorg as session instead?

Yes, but I am using Wayland, not Xorg.

I never found anything on it. Do you have a link? I'd like to read up on it.

The solution is to use Xorg, not Wayland.

You are the last person to the party. All the relevant links are (mostly) several weeks old. Wayland breaks--well--everything, nearly. Not ready for prime time...

Re: Cannot switch users (Gnome3 and GDM)

See eg. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1681242
And c00ter is right: prepare for several "glitches" with gnome on wayland for the time being - it simply needs more time to catch up.
