Correct HiDPI configuration for KDE

Configuring HiDPI has been pretty frustrating for me so far.
There is the wiki page on the matter but configuring this properly is pretty much impossible even with its help. Just now I messed with the settings again to get Okular to work correctly (maybe it was just a bug caused by the update after all – it was essentially rendering everything pixelated) and have messed up my configuration again. I can't really say my previous settings very really satisfactionary either.

Basically you can configure three things:

  1. X server DPI information by having SDDM set the parameter. I thought this should be set to the DPI of the physical screen?

  2. Display scale factor in KDE system settings > monitor settings. I assume for HiDPI this is supposed to be set to 2 otherwise the icons turn out really small?

  3. Enforced font DPI under KDE system settings > fonts. I have no clue what to set this to, this is basically trial and error until things look somewhat ok.

Which ones should I change and to what? So far I always had very inconsistent look and feel even between KDE applications. Usually the spacing of UI elements is also wrong. Are these bugs or a result of a bad setup? Also I am wondering how I will manage to get consistent scaling with GTK apps like firefox, but this seems even more complicated. Why are there so many knobs for HiDPI...

Re: Correct HiDPI configuration for KDE

you hvnt given much info, like resolution?
FYI a lot of hard ware/middle ware gives silly numbers for things like DPI i think mine give 96dpi.
for me on 3600*1800 (i did all this 4 months ago so some defaults might have improved)
* monitor scaling to 1.5 (you can use fractional values)
* force font resolution to 180 (i may have changed font sizes, cant remember)
* for login screen, added in sddm.conf: set ServerArguments=-dpi 180
* since tty are unreadabe, in /etc/vconsole.conf added
FONT=ter-732n
MAP=8859-2_to_uni
+ required early modesetting (via grub) to prevent corrupt text
* you might also need to change xterm fonts
* chrome/firefox have there own controls (i only require default page scaling for chrome)
* application toolbars for some applications are tiny, i dont think the controls given can change this (i seldom use them anyway)
