[solved] kwin and nouveau: no hardware rendering, only llvmpipe

Hi. System is Dell Latitude E6430 latest BIOS, NVIDIA Corporation GF108GLM [NVS 5200M], Optimus switched off (= no Intel VGA), running latest Nouveau driver, Plasma Desktop with Kwin. I am sure it is some misconfiguration, because I installed a minimal Arch with Nouveau and Plasma on a different hard-drive, and everything is working as expected. I have searched the forums and the Internet, but I am running out of ideas.

This is my current install (stupendous):

[christoph@stupendous:~]$ kwin_x11 --replace &
[1] 2437
[christoph@stupendous:~]$ OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.9, 256 bits)
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 13.0.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
Driver: LLVMpipe
GPU class: Unknown
OpenGL version: 3.0
GLSL version: 1.30
Mesa version: 13.0.2
X server version: 1.18.4
Linux kernel version: 4.8.13
Requires strict binding: yes
GLSL shaders: yes
Texture NPOT support: yes
Virtual Machine: no

This is the new, minimal Arch install (calvin):

[christoph@calvin ~]$ kwin_x11 --replace &
[1] 1055
[christoph@calvin ~]$ OpenGL vendor string: nouveau
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on NVC1
OpenGL version string: 4.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 13.0.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.30
Driver: Nouveau
GPU class: Unknown
OpenGL version: 4.3
GLSL version: 4.30
Mesa version: 13.0.2
X server version: 1.18.4
Linux kernel version: 4.8.13
Requires strict binding: yes
GLSL shaders: yes
Texture NPOT support: yes
Virtual Machine: no

Things I already did: Removed/synchronized configuration in /etc/xorg.conf.d, removed and installed kwin, re-installed nouveau and mesa, created a new user for testing. The user is in the video group, although this does not seem to be necessary anymore, as the user is not in video within the new install (calvin). I also compared the Xorg.0.log of the current and new install, but I do not see any significant difference.

[christoph@stupendous:~]$ pacman -Q | grep -i -e libgl -e nvidia -e nouveau
lib32-mesa-libgl 13.0.2-1
libglade 2.6.4-5
mesa-libgl 13.0.2-2
xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.13-1

Following the kwin/nouveau logs current install (stupendous) and kwin/nouveau logs new install (calvin). No help within Topics with posts containing 'nouveau llvmpipe' or Google.
Any help is very appreciated!

Edit: I forgot the xorg.conf, but it is very minimal, I even tried without one.

[christoph@stupendous:~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf
Section "Device"
    Identifier "NVIDIA NVS 5200M"
    Driver "nouveau"
    Option "DRI" "3"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Re: [solved] kwin and nouveau: no hardware rendering, only llvmpipe

Checked the xorg log and glxinfo to ensure it's not kwin?

I looked into Xorg.0.log and found the following, as said I also compared Xorg.0.log of the non-working and working setup. For me it looks like xorg is doing fine, but maybe I am missing something.

[ 9.853] (II) [drm] nouveau interface version: 1.3.1
[ 9.853] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[ 9.853] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"
[ 9.853] (II) Module "dri2" already built-in
[ 9.853] (--) NOUVEAU(0): Chipset: "NVIDIA NVC1"

[ 10.080] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Hardware support for Present enabled
[ 10.080] (II) NOUVEAU(0): [DRI2] Setup complete

[ 10.080] (II) Loading sub module "exa"
[ 10.080] (II) LoadModule: "exa"

[ 10.080] (II) Module exa: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[ 10.080] compiled for 1.18.4, module version = 2.6.0
[ 10.080] ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 20.0
[ 10.081] (II) EXA(0): Driver allocated offscreen pixmaps
[ 10.081] (II) EXA(0): Driver registered support for the following operations:
[ 10.081] (II) Solid
[ 10.081] (II) Copy
[ 10.081] (II) Composite (RENDER acceleration)
[ 10.081] (II) UploadToScreen
[ 10.081] (II) DownloadFromScreen

Not sure what to look for in glxinfo?

Whether it says gallium on llvm as well.
Please post the entire log (and ensure it's an up-to-date one, ie. watch the timestamp on the file) - you'll find logs in /var/log as well as ~/.local/share/xorg

Re: [solved] kwin and nouveau: no hardware rendering, only llvmpipe

Full logs and output from glxinfo, Xorg, dmesg etc. can be found in pastebin, see my first post. The pastebin contains (in that order) the output of kwin_x11 --replace, glxinfo, Xorg.0.log and dmesg of yesterday evening and journalctl -b (filtered 'nouveau|kwin'). Maybe not obvious enough to click the links using my wording "Following the..." Sorry.

Sorry, I expected that to be kwin supportInformation
Just a hunch: what virtualbox packages do you have installed?

I also compared the Xorg.0.log of the current and new install, but I do not see any significant difference.

I do see them, just search both logs for DRI3 .

What is the purpose of the kwin replace command ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Nothing fancy, just the standard packages.

[christoph@stupendous:xorg]$ pacman -Q | egrep -i 'virtualbox'
virtualbox 5.1.10-1
virtualbox-guest-iso 5.1.10-1
virtualbox-host-dkms 5.1.10-1

The DRI3 Option was a test for resolving the issue. However having it active or not does not make any significant difference. Maybe not ideal to have the log posted with this option on in one case, and off in the other case. But as said, it does not make a difference.

Lone_Wolf wrote:

[christoph@stupendous:xorg]$ kwin_x11 --help
Usage: kwin_x11 [options]
KDE window manager

Options:
[snip]
  --replace Replace already-running ICCCM2.0-compliant window
                             manager

Doing a replace gives some information about the OpenGL renderer, Mesa version etc.

Anything in "env | grep -i libgl"?
Any other leftovers from hybrid setup approaches?

Re: [solved] kwin and nouveau: no hardware rendering, only llvmpipe

env | grep -i libgl
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1

Argh! Yes, that was it. I did this because kontact/kmail kept crashing (and it still does). So I either have software rendering, or my old issue of kontact/kmail keeps crashing.
Anyway I mark this thread as solved. Thanks for helping my memory! smile
