Laptop won't hibernate, just shutsdown.

So I've been trying to get hibernate to work for some time now because I'd like to continue where I left off without eating up my battery. When I run,

 systemctl hibernate 

my laptop shuts shuts off altogether. If someone would please shed light on my issue that'd be great.
