Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

Hello,

I came back to my computer after leaving it running all Christmas break, and first thing I did was run `sudo pacman -Syu` and reboot.  Upon reboot, my Terminator terminal windows no longer respect their transparent background settings.

Here is a transaction log of my pacman:

I've seen a lot of posts referencing an upgrade to gtk3 being the issue, however I believe I had already upgraded to gtk3 before the break with no issues with transparency (also I don't see it in the transaction log).  The only line that I think has anything to do with this issue is that Terminator itself was upgraded.  Anyone else experiencing this issue? (Maybe it's a regression?)

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

Well,

I took it upon myself to uninstall `terminator-1.90-1-any` and install a cached version `terminator-1.0-2-any` from December 8th, and transparency is back!  I'm not sure whether to mark this issue as solved, as my issue is, however I still don't know of a way to get the newest version to respect transparency settings.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

I could be wrong here (I don't actually use terminator) but isn't that program just a load of python wrappers around GNOME terminal?

That being the case, the current version of that emulator has lost support for transparency so I don't think it will work any more.

I would recommend switching to rxvt-unicode & tmux instead, that combination can do everything that terminator can but with a much lower overhead. And it also offers true transparency smile

Nope, I can't offer a solution, but I use Terminator on testing branch, and have never lost transparency. Just checked, and still working.

After I've updated my system, I've the same problem. You could be right, but right clicking and opening the preferences dialog, the transparency option is still available. If it is discontinued, that behaviour does not make really sense.

Additionally the copy&paste behaviour is on my system broken. Before I've updated my system, I could mark something in terminator and by clicking the middle mouse button / scroll wheel the marked text was pasted in place. Now the last item I've copied explicitly into the clipboard (e.g. by hitting [Ctrl] + [C]) is pasted in place.

Somehow strange.

Edit: The "copy on selection" option has to be set http://askubuntu.com/questions/211292/a … k-to-paste to fix the copy&paste issue.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

In addition to the transparent background issue terminator is not getting the font configuration and is showing a smaller font, despite it is set the option 'use the system fixed width font'.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

So it seems that if I enable compositing with the new terminator 1.90-xx (and gtk3), true transparency is enabled, where other windows are visible through my terminator window's background.  While this works, it is not the behavior I've had in my last 4 years of using terminator + xfce.  I've enjoyed having terminator's background showing my desktop background no matter how many windows are "behind" it.

Looking at

man terminator_config

I see the

global_config

option called

disable_real_transparency (string)

which defaults to False.

I edited the config file under

~/.config/terminator/config

and added both the lines

disable_real_transparency = "True"

(with quotes/string) and

disable_real_transparency = True

(without quotes/boolean) and restarted Terminator with seemingly no effect.  I've also tried disabling XFCE compositing with this option specified (both ways) also with no effect.

@Roken: do you have compositing enabled? And are you using XFCE?

Interesting. I checked also, also on testing. I don't generally use transparency but it is currently not working in terminator for my setup.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

Well, as a proof (on a fully updated testing system) this is what I have:

In case it helps, I have an Nvidia card and use compton as my compositor.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

@Roken: Does your terminator provide "true transparency" i.e. another window behind your terminator one would also be visible, or is only the desktop background visible?

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

I have also noticed this problem after post Xmas upgrade. Terminator transparency works fine under both XFCE and KDE sessions for me, but does not work in a Gnome session.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

I have the same issue. To add some information my Terminator window is actually transperent for a fraction of a second when I start Terminator, but then goes black. But that at least shows that the capability is there.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

It seems that the the Terminator dev team decided to test their GTK3 dev branch in the wild by releasing it as a stable version 1.90.

The transparency issue has been acknowledged and addressed in the trunk build.

Long story short. To get transparency back in Terminator you can either use this AUR package or grap the oldstable GTK2 port and use it until a new GTK3 stable version has been released.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

In my circumstance, not only the transparency not work, but also have the problem about hide scroll bar..I config terminator to hide scroll bar as default, but if I split a terminator(Ctrl + Shift + E/O), the scroll bar will appear.... sad Now I have fallback to version 0.98-2.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

@LouisDK I've grabbed and installed the "terminator-gtk3-bzr" package as of this morning, and still do not have the fake transparency I've grown to love.  Here is my configuration file for terminator:

[global_config]
  title_transmit_bg_color = "#3b0083"
  disable_real_transparency = "True"
[keybindings]
[layouts]
  [[default]]
    [[[child1]]]
      parent = window0
      type = Terminal
    [[[window0]]]
      parent = ""
      type = Window
[plugins]
[profiles]
  [[default]]
    background_darkness = 0.75
    background_image = None
    background_type = transparent
    cursor_color = "#aaaaaa"

I've tried the value of `disable_real_transparency` with and without quotes with no effect.  For supplementary information I'm running XFCE4 with the recent gtk3 upgrade.  To get transparency back I have to downgrade to 1.0.2 gtk2 oldstable port.

Is there something I'm missing with this 'fixed' version of terminator to get fake transparency working?

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

I had the same problem.  But I got it working like this : https://i.stack.imgur.com/9dYi5.jpg

My solution :
    step 1 : remove all compositors  like "xcompmgr" , "transset-df" ...
    step 2 : Install compton

sudo pacman -S compton

    step 3 : add compton to startup . ( In my case , (I use xmonad) I just added exec compton &  in my .xinitrc file)
    step 4 : Now try setting transparency in terminator.

Re: Terminator Background Transparency Not Working

Thanks for sharing, but this is unlikely to be related to OP's problem from seven months ago.

However, since they haven't returned to give us any more information I'm going to go ahead and close this topic now. OP, if you want it reopened, please file a report.

Closing.
