New RX480 behaving weird only 512MB VRAM in ATTILA, red sand in Verdun

Hi,

for Christmas I got a PowerColor RX480 Red Devil. At home I tried it in the W7 machine of my brother and it did OK, but not as expected. Then I thought that the W7 drivers might not be as optimized. Now I put it in my Arch machine and it has even more issues.

The performance is nowhere near the expected level. Textures are completely wrong or i.e. Total War Attila only recognises 512MB of VRAM while it recognised 4096 in my brothers machine. Attila then warns me that the VRAM is too low and reduces the textures by its own to a ridiciulously low level. Attila also states that it is using the Gallium + AMDGPU driver, which seems weird to me.

ADD: While trying and testing I found a not game related Problem. Videos as well as moving windows around is stuttery. After logging in with lightdm there is a very fine grid after login, each time with a different color.

Some things I found:

Are there any ways on how to test the proper functionality of the card? How can I be sure that it is a driver or hardware problem?

Help would be much appreciated  smile

Re: New RX480 behaving weird only 512MB VRAM in ATTILA, red sand in Verdun

Is amdgpu really that crappy? amdgpu-pro hasn't been updated since end october...

I couldn't believe it and installed Antergos on a spare SSD, with my games on a RAID5. As I couldn't believe the state of the open-source AMD driver.

Most of my games do worse than on my old GTX660. Some work fine, like Bioshock Infinite or less so Empire Total War.. Most work horrible like, War Thunder has framerates in the menu from 10-20fps, textures in Verdun are reddish but has good performance, ATTILA doesn't recognise the VRAM, Arma 3 is even up to worse than on the 660.

Kernel 4.9 should be around the corner and I've read it might improve the situation. Originally I bought this card because of the open source driver, praised on phoronix, but ...

Does anyone have some thoughts on this?

Re: New RX480 behaving weird only 512MB VRAM in ATTILA, red sand in Verdun

I don't really know if can be useful , but time ago I was in a same problem , like some games from Unreal Engine ( Spec Ops ) had the same problem on linux , and don't use more than that memory ... the solution was posted like this :

cd /tmp

git clone https://github.com/Kryuko/ue3_linux_opti

cd ue3_linux_opti/

chmod 777 UE3_Linux_Opti.sh

./UE3_Linux_Opti.sh

https://github.com/Kryuko/ue3_linux_opti
For those games works great , but I don't know if this solution can be used on other engines too .
