[SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

Hi all,

I'm having some issue using gnome 3.22. It crashes right after I login and I can't found out why. So I would like a little help here smile

The problem occur only with gnome (openbox seems to work just fine) and for all users.

Here is uname -a

Linux kmsi-gs63vr-6rf-sp 4.8.13-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Dec 9 07:24:34 CET 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Here is my journalctl relevant part :

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

I had very similar issue. For me it was a gnome-extension that caused the problem. Don't know exactly which one though... only ran 3. Drop-down-terminal, dash-to-dock and Transmission-daemon-indicator.

Try disabling all of your extensions with:

gnome-shell-extension-tool -d

You can find your installed extensions here:

ls ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

To me it was all of the enabled extensions. Had to disable them all. So it's probably something to do with the gnome-shell itself.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

Actually now it happended again. So shell extensions trigger it but the problem might be something else. Coincidentally I've just removed all inifiniality packages and reverted back to freetype2. I've also enabled interpreter version 40.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

@KevinH -  I've run into the same issue today (beef with infinality) and could track it down to issues with SVG Icons. So every time the GnomeShell/Exposé tried to display such an icon it would crash. Files preview for SVG Icons would not work either.

I have flushed pretty much every Icon-Cache I could find, but in the end flushing gdk pixbuf query loaders helped:

sudo /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache

Note that you need to do that AFTER removing infinality.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

What worked for me finally is to remove everything related to infiniality with this guide: https://gist.github.com/cryzed/e002e705 … 9e748c5671
And then reinstall gdk-pixbuf2 package.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

@kotteswe, @cb951303

Tried to disable all extensions, I'm now on my gnome session. But what happen when reactivating them ? (I'll try that now)

@Scimmia

extra/freetype2 2.7.1-1 [installed]

@pulsar256

I've some infinality fonts installed, I'll try that too

EDIT

For now the issue seems to be with caffeinated extension only.

@pulsar256

Ok, there is definitely something with GdkPixbuf. Igot this when reactivating some extensions.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

Hello.

I add this problem too this morning, it is the same problem than this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=221649.

Solution that works for me: uninstall infinality (cairo, fontconfig, and freetype2), and replace them by mainstream packages (which now render fonts pretty well, I can't see a difference with Infinality).

[Edit] Sorry I missed @cb951303 post, who already said the same.

What are you talking about!? OPs problem is about what we're talking about. Gnome crashes because of infiniality fuck up.

Did you try to reinstall gdk-pixbuf2 after removing everything about infiniality? That's what did it for me.

Okay, the issue seems solved.

Remove all about infinality, and reinstalled gdk-pixbuf2.

Now i can activate the caffeine extension without making gnome crash.

You must have missed where he had freetype2 installed, not the infinality version.

@Scimmia

Yes freetype2 installed but 1 font from infinality (source code pro in fact). Seems the issue was related to that.

A font wouldn't have had any effect on this and has nothing to do with the issues everyone else was talking about

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome crash after login

And yet

yaourt -S freetype2 lib32-freetype2 fontconfig lib32-fontconfig cairo lib32-cairo
yaourt -R otf-source-code-pro-pwl-ibx
yaourt -S gdk-pixbuf2

Solved the issue.
