[kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Plasma 5.9 beta is now available for testing in the [kde-unstable] repo. See https://www.kde.org/announcements/plasma-5.8.95.php for release notes. Only x86_64 packages are available.

As usual, you need to have [testing] enabled. Report packaging issues to bugs.archlinux.org with the [kde-unstable] label, and upstream issues to bugs.kde.org.

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

The Wayland session does not work here (it worked on Plasma 5.8) ; all I get is my mouse pointer, conky and a black screen.

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

With the wayland session only, krunner crashes, using journalctl -b -p err, I can see lots of krunner coredumps...

I get a black screen and conky etc. I can then start krunner and plasmashell from a terminal but weirdly kwin can't manage KDE application windows, which have no window decorations and don't respond to taskar clicks (maximise/minimise). However, a pure QT app like octopi works normally and Chrome as well.

Typing from kwin-X11 :-(

Why sddm.service failed for me?

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Thanks arojas. So fast.

I'm not seeing the new network configuration module in System Settings.

The Network section just has the usual "'Settings" and "Connectivity" icons.

I searched to see if maybe I needed to add a package, but didn't see anything.

You need plasma-nm

Indeed. You should get it after installing that package.

So far, I haven't seen any major problems.
The only issues I've seen so far is 2 „System Settings” crashes and 1 kwin crash. The error logs weren't any helpful though... Also, for now I don't have any reproductible steps for those.

I had to enable the service manually to make it work (Workspace -> Startup and Shutdown -> Background Services -> Application menus daemon)

Can someone check if the scroll events are working over the panel?
Seems that after the update panel applets aren't receiving scroll events anymore.

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Well  the global menu as a widget actually looks much uglier than I thought it would. Not a huge fan so far. Also did anyone get the global menu in the window bar working? doesn't do anything for me. And what about that huge font for the digital clock? it's also kind of ugly and much too big in my opinion.

Apart from that, I really like the visual changes so far, especially the task manager tooltips and the new scroll bars.

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

The global menu in the window bar works fine for me after switching to it in the application style fine tuning as well as actually adding the application menu button in the decoration settings.

Also, about the wayland session, it has been broken for me ever since the Qt 5.8 release canditate (even with Plasma 5.8) in the exact same way.

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Could the severe breakage in the 5.9 Beta Wayland session be due to Qt 5.8.0 RC2, then?

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Can someone try rebuilding kwayland to see if it fixes the Wayland session problems?

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Doesn't seem to make any difference for me after rebuilding the kwayland package.

Also, KDE and Qt programs appear to be running just fine in sway (using QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland and QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=KDE).

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Maybe we should try to revert to non-RC QT packages and try Wayland session again ?

Edit : nope ; apparently plasmashell needs them.

SDDM background keeps resetting. Doesn't matter if file is in /usr/share/wallpapers or home. That blue background still hurts my eyes.

This is a kcm-sddm bug. You could report it to the https://bugs.kde.org .

Background

The Breeze sddm theme 5.8 and later was fixed by: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/126524/

...This is fixed by copying the wallpaper to the root directory of the
selected theme.

On save the sddmauthhelper copies the background from the absolute path
into the theme directory and sets the "background" key of the
theme.user.conf to the copied file....

A patch has been added to the Breeze sddm theme 5.8.95: https://phabricator.kde.org/D2983

This patch reworks the Background component in the SDDM theme to support distinct "image" and "color" modes, with a background image being displayed in the former mode and a solid colour in the latter.

It further adds the background colour and the background type to the configuration file.

This patch does not touch the KCM. That will be a separate patch.

The KCM separate patch is missing !

Workaround
(working at here)

After you add the image background to the Breeze sddm theme add to the /usr/share/sddm/themes/breeze/theme.conf.user line:

type=image

The theme.conf.user should be with a image file:

[General]
type=image
background=Image_name.Image_type

An image: http://imgur.com/9VIwZ2M

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

Any ideas about solving the wayland problem? I tried the AUR kwayland-git package but still the same problems. I tried downgrading to the qt5 packages to [extra] but this resulted in more problems. Before installing these [kde-unstable] packages I used AUR *-git packages for everything and the KDE wayland experience was pretty solid...

Re: [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.9 beta

I disabled krunner by moving /etc/xdg/autostart/krunner but still the same problem. In the journal plasmashell now shows a coredump. Even without krunner, on X11 plasma loads with no problems.
