Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

Hi there,

I am facing a strange problem,
My USB-Mouse is working in the login screen (gdm) but not in gnome itself. However I can click!

It worked fine until I decided to upgrade all packages yesterday evening. Last update was about a week ago

Does anybody know what to do?

Cheers,
Matthias

What was updated? Is there anything in the journal? Presumably Gnome has mouse settings, have you looked at those?

Moving to NC...

Re: Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

Hi again,

I downgraded following packages to the following versions:

xf86-input-evdev-2.10.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
xorg-server-xwayland-1.18.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
xorg-server-common-1.18.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
xorg-server-1.18.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
xorg-mkfontdir-1.0.7-2-any.pkg.tar.xz

It works for now!
I also uninstalled xf86-input-libinput - this packages conflicts with the xorg-server in any way.

When I try to upgrade again, pacman wants to install libinput again. Maybe that's the problem! I blacklistet all packages as I don't know which one caused the problem.

However, there might still be a bug in pacman or in one of the concerned packages. I don't have the time to look at the source code changes right now but it is on my todo list!

Cheers,
Matthias

Do you have xf86-video-intel installed?

What's the output of coredumpctl info /usr/bin/Xorg --no-pager?

The intel driver is not installed. I made a rollback to the working package versions - whenever I have time to check, I'll post a coredump!

I am pretty sure it has sth to do with the added dependency of xorg (the xf86-input-libinput)

Re: Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

Did you solve this issue?
I'm having the same problem with the usb mouse. Downgraded to xorg 1.18 (xf86-input-libinput removed by pacman) to work.

Re: Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

Don't downgrade and remove xf86-input-evdev instead. Libinput is a more modern alternative that has received threaded input support in Xorg 1.19 which has made it a hard dep and the preferred xorg input driver.

Re: Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

I didn't want to downgrade. Unfortunately the mouse doesn't work with Xorg 1.19 and xf86-input-libinput. Actually, xf86-input-libinput doesn't enable the mouse for me with Xorg 1.18 either. Until the last -Syu I used xf86-input-evdev (and Xorg 1.18).  xf86-input-evdev in Xorg 1.19 makes no difference. I could right click only but no mouse movement.

Re: Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

Then you might A: report a bug to libinput and B: create a xorg.conf that tells Xorg to continue using the evdev driver for your mouse (it will default to using libinput but can be explicitly reconfigured to continue using evdev, look at e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mo … uring_Xorg for an example of how that roughly looks like

Re: Mouse working in gdm but not in gnome since the latest pacman -Syu

Thank you..
I created an xorg.conf file in etc/X11 performed a -Syu a new kernel and nvidia driver were installed as well as updating Xorg etc.
Interestingly, the boot failed with several (?7) acpi errors. I Managed to get to a terminal and deleted the new xorg.conf file rebooted and this time I saw about 3 ACPI errors but it did boot this time. I then downgraded the kernel, nvidia, Xorg etc again and now back to the beginning smile

EDIT (Solved for me. Hopefully you also);

My problem was a wifi usb mouse. Even though I tried with a normal usb mouse it still didn't work. Perhaps a reboot after replacing the wifi mouse (and removing the dongle) would of worked, but I cant remember if I tried that or not. To solve this issue I followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … figuration for libinput-list-devices information. There are several entries for my usb receiver so care was needed to chose the correct one.

I then scrolled down to Common Options ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … on_options ) and created a 75-mouse.conf file to place in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ using and renaming the basic configuration template given. Mine looks like this;

Section "InputClass"
  Identifier      "Evdev Mouse"
  Driver          "evdev"
  Option          "Compx 2.4G Receiver"  "/dev/input/event11"
EndSection

What threw me for a long time over this was even though I didn't have xf86-input-libinput installed at this point (only libinput) I was sure as V1del suggested, the answer was in editing/creating a xorg.conf file. Live and learn (and read more)!

Now xorg et al have all been updated to the latest with -Syu and all good again - though I've switched out to the LTS kernel due to a strange boot halt with nvidia.  I hope this helps someone.
