NM-applet unresponsive on startup

Observations:

Load into GUI
Takes 1-2 minutes for nm-applet to show in notification area
Unresponsive for a short time till it connects
(checked other icons in notification area and they remained responsive)
Once connected nm-applet becomes responsive

When i try to change to different wifi network it becomes unresponsive again
for 1-2 minutes until reconnection.

Terminal output:
killed nm-applet and ran from terminal.
Observed the following messages.

"(nm-applet:715): libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy

(nm-applet:715): nm-applet-WARNING **: Failed to show notification: The connection is closed
"

however nm-applet is now responsive for some reason but it still requires some way of addressing the startup issue.
