I just got a kindle and have been adding books just fine using pcmanfm. Just today, all of the sudden, the kindle will no longer work. The device appears in /dev for a brief moment, and then disappears. dmesg says thus:
[ 642.496688] usb 2-2: new high-speed USB device number 9 using ehci-pci
[ 642.655882] usb-storage 2-2:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected

[ 647.463093] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Synchronize Cache(10) failed: Result: hostbyte=0x01 driverbyte=0x00
Of course, how am I supposed to check the device if I cannot access it? What can I do here? I'm at a loss. This is the only machine I have to plug it in to.

Reboot the Kindle. I've seen this before, that usually does the job.

Thanks for the quick response Scimmia, but I already solved the problem. It was a bad usb cable.
On a whim, went and grabbed another cable to try it out and lo! It works just fine. >.<
