Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

Hi. Pretty fresh Archlinux installation on my dad's computer. He has a working Debian on another partition which outputs sound just fine, so hardware failure is ruled out I guess.

I tried several guides, tried the PulseAudio/Troubleshooting page on the wiki, but the sound is simply muted.

When I run xine with an mp3 file, it happily thinks there is sound (there is visualisation), I can see the process in pavucontrol, so pulseaudio seems to be exposed correctly to applications. I unmuted every possible channel in alsamixer. I even added the user to the audio group.
I'm desperate and I'm stuck now, can you please help me.

Throw in

pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

while playing through xine or whatever

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

You are playing to the Digital Output, something tells me you want to play to analog instead. Use

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo

or pavucontrol's configuration tab, to switch the profile.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

Woa, we're getting somewhere, because fiddling with pavucontrol the following happens:

On the Configuration tab I select Analog Stereo Output (unplugged), then on the Output devices tab I select the Headphones (unplugged) there is sound for one second, but pavucontrol immediately switches back to digital output and everything is muted again. I googled around and found several sources to set the default output and sink in /etc/pulse/default.pa but could not figure out which settings to use. Also, I don't understand why the output is marked (unplugged). I have tried every other jack outputs on the soundcard in vain.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

Hmm... flaky jack detection we meet again. Now that you mention it I notice that your  sink index is at 42 which shows that it is constantly reported as disconnected and reconnected. Can be workarounded by removing respectively commenting

load-module module-switch-on-port-available

and then forcing the correct profile on pulse start up with

set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
set-sink-port alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo analog-output-headphones

in your /etc/pulse/default.pa (the line to comment/remove is somewhere at the start, the other two should be appended at the end)  restart pulse

systemctl --user restart pulseaudio

should be enough

THANK YOU! What else is there to say. I happily mark this thread as solved.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

Glad to hear, these issues can be a bit weird to solve if you don't know what you are looking for. And they are usually caused by the hardware or the driver reporting wrong/weird information.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

I want to bump this thread, because this doesn't always work. When not, I find this in the logs:

Jan 19 23:19:15 horimi pulseaudio[6449]: No card found by this name or index.
Jan 19 23:19:15 horimi pulseaudio[6449]: Failed to initialize daemon.

When I do this:

~> pulseaudio --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.

I found this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177220 where the OP says: "It happens because I loaded the audio drivers statically in /etc/pulse/default.pa".

However in my case lspci reveals:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd GA-D525TUD (Realtek ALC887)
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 27
        Memory at e3280000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00

        Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link
        Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
        Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

The ID looks OK to me, but maybe I'm missing something?
A computer restart usually solves the problem.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

That's strange, that name should be stable. Can you post your whole default.pa as well as, while it's not working

journalctl -k | grep snd
journalctl -b --user-unit pulseaudio
aplay -l

are you using any non standard kernel module parameters (in modprobe.d or maybe through some power management tool like TLP or similar?)

No, vanilla arch installation.

That all looks normal maybe the output of

pulseaudio -vvv

during one of those not working moments might give some more insight.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

What happens if you comment load-module module-detect in your default.pa as follows:

### Automatically load driver modules depending on the hardware available
.ifexists module-udev-detect.so
load-module module-udev-detect
.else
### Use the static hardware detection module (for systems that lack udev support)
#load-module module-detect
.endif

Since this was hinted at in post #9. Troubleshooting your original error, I'm not 100% convinced that your last two lines in the defualt.pa:

set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
set-sink-port alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo analog-output-headphones

Are correct. Unfortunately, I don't have another solution to work with. Basically, because your hdmi and analog output are the same cards, adjusting those 2 lines might be helpful. See the following: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … -the-shell.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

@JBS The only thing that should be able to change on these names ist the last 0 as that corresponds to the ALSA index, shouldn't be a problem in this case as there is only one card. The non-udev module should never load itself anyway (and there's no HDMI card so that doesn't matter).

It feels like there might be a race with the soundcards becoming available and pulseaudio starting, but that should fix itself  on one of the subsequent restarts pulse attempts to do...  What might also help is simply letting pulse start even if it results in a failure to identify the card, maybe one could investigate why and how the names change. adding a .nofail before the offending lines could help us out here, like so

.nofail
set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
set-sink-port alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo analog-output-headphones

should at least let pulse continue startup, and afterwards one could check what the names are with pacmd list-cards

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

After putting .nofail into default.pa, the only difference pulseaudio -vvv gives is this:

D: [pulseaudio] protocol-dbus.c: Interface org.PulseAudio.Ext.StreamRestore1.RestoreEntry removed from object /org/pulseaudio/stream_restore1/entry0
D: [pulseaudio] protocol-dbus.c: Interface org.PulseAudio.Ext.StreamRestore1.RestoreEntry removed from object /org/pulseaudio/stream_restore1/entry1

It is maybe worth to mention, that in the last two days there was no sound at all, my dad rebooted the machine at least ten times.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

D: [pulseaudio] module-udev-detect.c: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0 is busy: yes

Points to something being active and blocking access for pulse, what does

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

give (again during a not working moment)? Have you installed a MIDI daemon like timidity or fluidsynth and enabled their systemd services?

Man, thanks for being so patient with me.

root@horimi ~# fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: daddy 747 F.... pulseaudio

We haven't installed anything like that.

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

OK I just found a permanent solution, or at least I hope so:

pacman -R pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa pulseaudio-gconf plasma-pa libcanberra-pulse pavucontrol pulseaudio-alsa

I just had to fiddle a bit in KDE system settings and now the sound works flawlessly, the features of pulseaudio we haven't used anyway.
I just have to be careful in the future not to install pulseaudio again, now it looks like Alsa does the job nicely.
It would be nice to find out what the problem was, but I rather let my dad use his computer and be satisfied with Archlinux big_smile
Guys, thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

Re: Audio is muted, sorry can't come up with a better title

if you have installed those then you must have alsamixer, run alsamixer and make sure "Master" and "PCM" not muted. If they are muted, you can press m on your keyboard to unmute it.
