[Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

I upgraded my system today, with plasma-framework going from 5.29 to 5.30: I think this was the major part of the upgrade.

Upon rebooting and logging in, nothing works properly:

- konsole segfaults upon startup, no wy to get a working konsole
- no X program starts:  a window is popping up telling me of "ambiguous  shortcuts" or something similar

There were no explicit changes from my side concerning any of these programs or their config (shortcuts and such).

What is the best way to rollback the entire plasma-frameworks group of packages to 5.29?

I tried pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/plasma-framework-5.29.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz but to no avail

thanks

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

Post the errors you get, not your interpretation of them and the pacman.log not what you think is the major part of an upgrade. With the most common cause these days, I'm going to assume you have freetype-infinality packages installed, which are unsupported and has been a well covered topic across the board. The KF5 packages are  stable here.

If you don't have infinality installed, verify the integrity of your Installation with

pacman -Qkk

and reinstall packages that might be reported as being broken.

There's lots of kde-related messages in the journal: which ones should I search for?

Thanks

Hmm now that's a weird one.  Just to get it out of the way, what's your processor and if it's anything Intel, have you configured the Microcode update already? If not, do so.

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

I just ran into the issue with my lightdm just showing a mouse cursor after an update and reboot.

Culprit was webkit2gtk-2.14.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz  upgrading to webkit2gtk-2.14.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz hosed my lightdm-webkit2-greeter.

Downgraded and everything resumed.

I had same problem yesterday. Try to downgrade package webkit2gtk from version 2.14.2-2 to older. This solved my problem with black screen.

Could you please refrain from hijacking the topic? This never was about whatever broke in lightdm

I never got these before the last update.

When I use kde's session management (with mainly konsole windows to open automatically) instead of konsoles opening I get a konsole warning window with these "developer infos"

@dimmuboy,gsstratton: webkit2gtk seems unrelated in my case, downgrading this package changed nothing.

What i did now to get a working system again is to restore packages with pacman to a date before my last upgrade:
How to restore all packages to a specific date

Thanks

I'm on an Intel Broadwell processor:  Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5250U CPU @ 1.60GHz.

I didn't have the intel-ucode package installed; I did so in the meanwhile, I added it to my kernel command line and in fact it gets loaded at startup:

dmesg | grep microcode
[ 0.000000] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0x24, date = 2016-04-29
[ 0.653770] microcode: sig=0x306d4, pf=0x40, revision=0x24
[ 0.653934] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.01 <tigran@aivazian.fsnet.co.uk>, Peter Oruba

but unfortunately it didn't change anything with regard to the desktop error.

Thanks.

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

Apparently the shortcut message is just a warning. So I don't think that's what is causing the issue, but you might want to fix it or it will get annoying.
You haven't been very clear, is the problem only with KDE applications or any X programme?
If it's only in KDE, can you try with an empty session? (in kde's session management or just closing everything before restarting it)

It happens only with KDE apps; firefox or the urxvt terminal do not show this problem, when I try to start them.
I did already start with an empty session: the problem remains the same, especially konsole segfaulting when trying to start one.
Is the "Ambigious Shortcuts" warning newly introduced? I didn't change any of the shortcuts and I didn't get the warning ever before the last upgrade.

Thanks

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

Also, I thought this might be related to the touchscreen stuff I installed recently from the AUR: frame, geis, grail, touchegg, but apparently it wasn't.
I removed every single one of these packages with pacman, but this didn't change anything.

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

Yes it was introduced in the latest version of kxmlgui.
kxmlgui also seems to be involved in your crashes, you can try to downgrade the package to the 5.29 version. If it works with 5.29, you can try to create a new user, log in and see if it still happens with 5.30 and the new user. If it works with 5.30 and the new user, it means the problem is somewhere in a config file.

Yes: this is it! the culprit is kxmlgui.
I downgraded this package alone to 5.29 and everything is back to normal. KDE framework is now on 5.30 here except this single package.
None of the aforementioned behavior occurs: no "ambigious shortcut" warnings, no segfaulting konsole.

Antonio: can you see what might cause the problem in this package?

Thanks.

Well, there are two issues here. The crash with session restore should definitely be reported upstream. Fot the warning, try restoring the standard shortcuts to their defaults in systemsettings.

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

You have got at least a few unsupported packages in your system (only KDE related):

gen2arch wrote:
libkactivities4 4.13.3-3
libkexiv2_4 15.08.3-2
libkscreen4 1.0.5-2
plasma-applet-network-monitor-git r12.d0943c1-1
strigi 0.7.8-9
ttf-oxygen 1:5.4.3-1

At least a few are obsolete. At least a few seems that are residue from prior packages (like geoclue or gpgmepp). And at least one is outdated (like qpdfview).

According to my experience all not neccessary and prior KDE installation related package usually makes troubles in new version of Plasma. Then try to inpect your system for obsolete, not supported and not necessarily package and remove them. Rebuild outdated packages and packages related to Plasma/KF5 which are build from AUR.

Is there a possibility with pacman to inquire which packages need one of those you quoted? e.g. "which package depends on libkactivities4"?

Thanks

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

In the official repos, none of them should be dependant on anything from that list, that's why they even show up in pacman -Qm (those packages are not part of the repos anymore), in general you could use

pactree -r $package

to figure out what might still need a certain package

Re: [Solved] kxmlgui: completely botched system after last upgrade

Following anthons suggestion I tried the newest version (5.30) of kxmlgui with another user, and konsole didn't crash.

It took me the a long time to investigate what exactly within ~/.config causes the crash.

The result is the following: it is exactly one file .config/kdeglobals; and within that file one specific section "[Shortcuts]".

If I delete this entire section, all runs fine; if I leave the settings (around 50) in the file, konsole crashes.

I never made any edits to this file except probably through the settings interface and not recently.

So there must be some change to kxmlgui that causes certain programs to crash if there is a non-empty "[Shortcuts]" section in  .config/kdeglobals.
