I installed 'awesome' 4.0 the other day, copied the default configuration file into ~/.config/awesome as per the wiki, and started it with via xinit, and got this:
Sorry for crappy quality. It shows just a black screen, with the top right corner occupied by a white terminal. But the cursor doesn't flash, and nothing I type appears in the terminal. All I can do is switch to a different tty, and reboot the computer.
I haven't been able to find anyone else having this issue, and have no idea what I need to look for to fix it.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Did you edit your ~/.xinitrc to actually launch Awesome? That looks like the default TWM session to me.

I don't have twm installed. I never have. I've been using XFCE before trying awesome.
Here's my ~/.xinitrc for good measure:
#!/bin/sh
userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
# merge in defaults and keymaps
if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi
if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi
if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then
xrdb -merge "$userresources"
fi
if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi
# start some nice programs
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
# Here Xfce is kept as default
session=${1:-xfce}
case $session in
awesome ) exec awesome;;
xfce|xfce4 ) exec startxfce4;;
# No known session, try to run it as command
*) exec $1;;
esacI am, of course, launching awesome using 'startx awesome'.

I think you may be wrong on that count. What is the output of pacman -Ss xorg-twm ?

pacman -Ss xorg-twm gives me:
extra/xorg-twm 1.0.9-1
Tab Window Manager for the X Window SystemBut that's because it's syncing with the repository right? What I'm supposed to use is pacman -Qi for installed packages right? pacman -Qi xorg-twm gives me:
error: package 'xorg-twm' was not foundPretty sure it's not installed...

There's no window mana ger running, either awesome crashes or that session handling code in your xinitrc does nothing or tries to start (uninstalled?) xfce.
Move the mouse cursor into the xterm. It'll receive input focus and you can start to play around. Try "awesome &" for a beginning.

Ah yes. Mousing into the window worked. I couldn't see the mouse until doing that, so I didn't know the mouse was actually functional. Running 'awesome &' does bring up the what appears to be the default awesome setup. XFCE is still installed, and I'm using it until I get awesome working properly.
Now my problem is getting awesome to run correctly the first time, and not having to have a xterm window open for as long as I want to keep my session running.

I'd start by debugging out your xinitrc, eg. "echo $session > /tmp/xinitrc.dbg" or something because either startx doesn't wire down your parameter or something else might be wrong.
Online
I just edited the xinitrc to remove my parameter choosing, and just use the plain and simple 'exec awesome' at the end. And with that, awesome starts just fine. I assumed it wasn't a problem with xinitrc, especially since I copied that parameter choosing the WM part straight from the wiki. Thanks for pushing me to check xinitrc, I wouldn't have done so otherwise. Now the problem is for me to figure out why xinitrc wasn't working, which I will do in my own time for now. Thanks everyone. I appreciate it ![]()

The wiki also says "startx ~/.xinitrc awesome" :-P
