Hello,
i recently had a problem with my nvidia 460 due to driver issues discussed here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=216209
since this issue was marked solved I ran an update and got the problem described in subject line.
after a lot of wasted time and chrooting I managed to find a configuration that works for the geforce 460 gtx card with proprietary drivers ( i managed to install nouveau, but the experience was noticably worse ) ... and I leave it here, because someone might have the same weird special case ...
linux 4.18.13 ( linux-lts / nvidia-lts did not work for me ... )
nvidia 375.10-1 ( anything below was to old ( wasn't able to rever to former working 367.35-xx ) and nvidia 375.20-xx and 375.26-xx both crashed )
xorg-server 1.18.4-1 ( which was a pain to downgrade ... )
in pacman.conf i currently have:
IgnorePkg = linux linux-headers nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl nvidia-dkms
IgnoreGroup = xorg
Please report back here, if you made something else work, I will report if future upgrades resolve the situation ...

Hello!
I've had the same issue recently, after update on 31/1. startx was hanging up forever and reboot/shutdown could not be finished (even when I did not attempt to startx).
Seems that problem was in lib32-libdrm while there was last log message from drm module before Xorg hangup.
Yesterday I've pulled fresh updates (including lib32-libdrm package) and Xorg came back to life. I think, it was fixed in this packages:
[2017-02-08 00:13] [ALPM] upgraded lib32-libdrm (2.4.74-1 -> 2.4.75-1)
[2017-02-08 00:13] [ALPM] upgraded linux (4.9.6-1 -> 4.9.7-1)

Thanks for letting me know!
Yes this issue is solved and one can now update ... but you could still run into the following issue:
after updating I got no gnome didn't start, but I could log into a shell.
$ startx
complained about "missing" libEGL.so.1 , but after some searching i found out that I had to temporarily remove the nvidia package install mesa-libgl and reinstall nvidia package ... which made libEGL.so.1 reappear and after that startx brought up gnome ...
the things you do for updates ...
