[solved] "waiting for X server to begin accepting connections"

[This has been resolved (for me) by switching from Nouveau, to Nvidia, as mentioned in my second post.]

As of last night, When I boot up my laptop by itself (no dock) and try "startx", I get "waiting for X server to begin accepting connections". I waits for a few minutes and then I get...

******************************************************************
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

waiting for X server to shut down ..........
xinit: X server slow to shut down, sending KILL signal

waiting for X server to die ...
xinit: X server refuses to die

*******************************************************************

This ONLY happens when it is NOT DOCKED. If I boot it up while it is on the Dell dock that it came with, I can run "startx" and it reacts as I would expect it to, starting i3, etc.

software:

This is an Optimus laptop, with xf86-Intel and xf86-nouveau installed and I am not doing any "early modesetting".
I have no login manager. I manually log in as my user at the console, and then manually run "startx" when I want to.

The last time I can remember running startx "un-docked" is Friday morning of last week, which was before the kernel update to 4.9.6-1 and the recent Xorg updates. There were other updates, as well though, so I don't really have a smoking gun at this point.

I will be happy to post any logs/configs/etc. that may be helpful to point me in the right direction.

Re: [solved] "waiting for X server to begin accepting connections"

Update...

After poking around quite a bit looking for Optimus related issues, I came across threads about the "lspci hangs" lockup that is mentioned at the bottom of the Archlinux Optimus page.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

I found that when DOCKED, I CAN run lspci in the console before starting x.
However, with my laptop by itself (not docked) lspci hangs, just like described in the posts I found.

I also found that if I DO use early KMS with the nouveau module in mkinicpio.conf, I cant run lspci or startx even when I AM docked. This further pointed me to my problem being between nouveau, the new kernel, combined, not playing nicely with my hardware.

I installed Nvidia and removed xf86-video-nouveau, and my problem has disappeared.

Should I mark this as [solved], since it's no longer "my problem", or leave it open in case somebody else has the same issue and is hellbent on using the Nouveau driver?

Mark it [Solved] and if anyone else is having issues, they can reference this if they need to.
