Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

I was just wondering what kernel (patchset) a general population of linux users uses...

If you have a comment on why you use the kernel you use, I would appreciate it big_smile

If you're interested, I also started the same poll on Gentoo Linux forums just to compare the results:

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

ive had arch for about a month and i already tried beyond and ck.. beyond is a little more.. beyond tongue lol.. you should definetely try it (even though there are some minor problems with using it (not the kernel itself, but installing other module like vmware modules could be a problem..) but its worth it.. i really love suspend2 tongue)

glad to know ur off crappy drugs (w1nd0w$) for a whole year and even though linux is like a very addicting drug, its much more safe tongue

love, tiny and nitro are dead. 2.4 will be dead on Arch when [testing] moves in, which is soonish.

as expected I use beyond.. duh.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

Beyond, because it performs very good (and it includes the CK patches)
and because it is able to correct my broken laptop's ACPI

by the way, iphitus, does beyond include Grsecurity or PaX patches ? (I guess not?)

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

I was using CK until a couple of weeks ago, when I moved on to try out the stock kernel again. Since I'm on stock now I voted vanilla 2.6. I'm planning to try out beyond soon too... And if it fixed your broken acpi profoX I'll cross my fingers and hope that it works for me too smile

it didn't fix it "by default" wink
I had to download custom DSDT tables and insert them somewhere related to initramfs.
But thats not possible with the stock kernel.

Check http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/view.php

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

sure you can use custom dsdt with stock kernel, check testing kernel or use mkinitcpio for stock 2.6.16 kernel

Maybe it's possible now, but it wasn't awhile ago

Maybe so, but not without using initrd/initramfs/..., right ?

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

Worth noting we already had a similiar poll about vanilla vs patchsets.

you can put one right into the kernel too, but that's pretty silly. You'll have to recompile anyway and if you chose a wrong dsdt table, you can start all over again

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

Arch stock kernel from Testing (2.6.17-RC6). Oddly, I find that -ck and -beyond reduce my machine's performance, causing the hard drive to work harder than it ought to and increasing application start times.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

I wanna bench the kernel as well.. should I compile kernel26 and nvidia on TOP of kernel26beyond and nvidia-beyond? And then run a program in the exact same env. twice? lol.. well maybe ill do that later cause I wanna get a high uptime for a record for myself smile

Then you need hardened linux distro.(openbsd another good choice for that, though i don't use it now)

or if you want high-performance, then tune everything, be a kernel hacker yourself.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

user, im not looking for uptime of months lol.. i put my system on standby often to save power and that still counts as up.. so I can get like 1000days, but i wont cause i sometimes need to restart the comp (X crashes or game crashes..)

Re: Which kernel (patchset) do you use?

I used Love-sources back in the day and loved it. That was some aweomse patchset. I then switched to ArchCK and now I'm using the prebuilt ArchCK package from testing (the first time I've gone prebuilt, and I have to say I like it)

read up on the start of this:

http://iphitus.loudas.com/beyond.html

ArchCK isnt supported. It's superseded by beyond, which is actually almost exactly the same thing, made by the same person and with all the same goals.
