[Solved] Hard disk clicking sound

Hi

I setted the option in /etc/default/tlp:

DISK_SPINDOWN_TIMEOUT_ON_BAT="80 80"

And getting this clicking sound in intervals: I changed back to:

# Hard disk spin down timeout:
#   0:        spin down disabled
#   1..240:   timeouts from 5s to 20min (in units of 5s)
#   241..251: timeouts from 30min to 5.5 hours (in units of 30min)
# See 'man hdparm' for details.
# Separate values for multiple disks with spaces. Use the special value 'keep'
# to keep the hardware default for the particular disk.
DISK_SPINDOWN_TIMEOUT_ON_AC="0 0"
DISK_SPINDOWN_TIMEOUT_ON_BAT="0 0"

But the clicking sound continues. Is there some othe way to check?

Thanks in advance.

Clicking = heart palpitation.  If the disk holds critical data, backup immediately. Consider ordering a replacement.  If the data are not critical do with it what you will...

Re: [Solved] Hard disk clicking sound

I have tried:

DISK_APM_LEVEL_ON_BAT="192 192"

perhaps may help. It seems that clicking has lessened for now, a bit.

Re: [Solved] Hard disk clicking sound

Should I change this value to 0?

"DISK_IDLE_SECS_ON_BAT=2"

The tlp guide doenst recommend it though.

Yesno, depends on the "click" - segate has a "cling" to it when the head enters rest position. Sounds scary in the beginning but is absolutely normal.

click-click-click--click-click--clicketyclick is however no good sign ;-)

@makh, consult "smartctl -a /dev/sda" on the health status of the device

Hi. I do have a question here for [bold]smartctl -t long[/bold]:

Re: [Solved] Hard disk clicking sound

twice. twice you aborted it.

Check the output of "smartctl -a" again, but the disk looks fine. As mentioned, it depends on the "click" sound, notably server disks aren't exactly silent.
You can check hdparm on whether your disk supports accoustic management ("man hdparm" first, do NOT use *any* flag without reading it up first, ever!)

Strange, I only ran test three times, as I recall, but probably one time it was a reboot so aborted ... but I didnt abort the other two tests:

# history |grep  smartctl

  468  smartctl -t long /dev/sda
  469  smartctl -H /dev/sda
  470  smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda
  471  smartctl -a /dev/sda
  475  smartctl -H /dev/sda
  476  smartctl -l long /dev/sda
  477  smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda
  478  smartctl -t long /dev/sda
  496  smartctl -t long /dev/sda
  497  smartctl -H /dev/sda
  498  smartctl -l /dev/sda
  499  smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda
  500  smartctl -H /dev/sda
  501  history |grep  smartctl

smartctl -a says:

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

Well if its fine, then I dont need to worry. Thankyou all for your kind response and help in this regards.

Re: [Solved] Hard disk clicking sound

"smartctl -a /dev/sda" should say more than that - the individual values might get you some information. That string does not (necessarily) mean there're absolutely no problems.
