Font rendering issue after uninstalling infinality (missing symbols)

Hi!

After updating the system recently I ran into this error message:

/usr/lib/libharfbuzz.so.0: undefined symbol: FT_Get_Var_Blend_Coordinate

...found out it was related to infinality being out of date, so I uninstalled infinality trying to follow this guide:
https://gist.github.com/cryzed/e002e705 … 9e748c5671

Almost everything works, but I do have an issue where some symbols get rendered as blocks instead. Specifically ↓, ↑ and ➜ (arrow symbols in case you can't see them), but that's probably just a symptom of a larger issue.
The errors are present in xmobar and urxvt, both of which are set to use XFT, so I'd assume the error is related to XFT or Freetype2?
One cause I considered was that the fonts themselves were missing the glyphs, but if I open vim (not gvim) - which should be using the same font as urxvt - it displays the symbol just fine, and libreoffice can also display them with those exact fonts.

You can see the problem on this screenshot, in xmobar at the top, urxvt on the left, and the two symbols displaying just fine in libreoffice on the right with the same fonts:

Any suggestion as to the cause?
Could it be a missing package, or a package that still relies on infinality being installed? A config issue? Something else?
How can it be that libreoffice and vim can display the symbols just fine in the same fonts?

Feel free to move the thread if you believe it should be in a different subforum.

Please don't embed large images into your posts. After nearly seven years on these forums, you should be aware of our rules by now..

Not a pacman issue, moving to Apps/DEs.

Re: Font rendering issue after uninstalling infinality (missing symbols)

Very well.

I've done some more testing, and even if I change the font rendering from XFT to XFLD in urxvt the issue persists, so it appears it's something affecting both, and not a freetype2 error?

Edit: It appears I've solved the issue in urxvt, by removing the local.conf it's suggested to create by https://gist.github.com/cryzed/e002e705 … 9e748c5671 ...and instead installing fonts-meta-extended-lt from AUR and doing the symlink from conf.avail to conf.d as described as an alternative solution in the link.

The xmobar/Bitstream Vera Sans Mono error remains, however.

Edit 2:
The xmobar issue stops being there if I change the font from bitstream vera sans mono to bitstream vera. Maybe fontconfig does something specific to bitstream vera mono and bitstream vera mono sans that breaks them?
