Gimp 2.9.4 gtk3 for hidpi screens

So gimp is pretty far behind the curve for those of us with hidpi displays. I've been trying to build 2.9.4, which is supposed to have an
--enable-vector-icons

build configure option for icons to scale, with gtk3 (which will scale the rest of the ui) but I am not having much luck. Anyone care to give it a go?
