[SOLVED] Random segfaults when using Qt5 apps

Hi everyone!

For about a while now, I've been getting random segfaults when using Qt5 applications. X restarts (takes down everything with it) and I have to log back in. Looking in dmesg I've seen some weird segfaults.

This happens completely at random. Sometimes it's when I click something, sometimes it just happens when the system is idle.
It happens with both KDE and non-KDE apps (Telegram), in both Plasma 5 and i3.

Here's the last one:

- I'm using Nvidia's propietary drivers not Noveau
- I've enabled microcode updates, no change (I'm running an old Ivy-bridge i5)
- I've re-installed both qt5-base and nvidia drivers, the only change is that now I don't see segfault entries in dmesg
- System is up to date on everything
- Kernel: 4.9.11, Nvidia drivers: 378.13
- Qt: 5.8.0, Plasma 5.9.1

Any ideas?

Re: [SOLVED] Random segfaults when using Qt5 apps

Well there is quite a lot of evidence that nouveau seems to be involved. Are you certain that it is not there in some form? can you post your Xorg log and

lspci -k
pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs mesa
cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf

I don't remember ever installing noveau, since I always needed CUDA. Here are the logs and commands.

Re: [SOLVED] Random segfaults when using Qt5 apps

you're getting and reporting segfaults but didn't provide them.
"X restarts" means the X11 display server crashed, not some Qt5 client (while the latter may have induced the X11 crash)
When such happens the next time check the Xorg.1.log, it should contain a backtrace (ie. stating what actually crashed) at the end. If unsure, paste it.

So far we only have "something crashes, probably X11" and an "older" dmesg, indicating trouble with the nouveau module which you however claim to do not use (and which should be blacklisted by installing nvidia) - ie. no usable information at all.

Re: [SOLVED] Random segfaults when using Qt5 apps

I say they are segfaults because that's what I read on dmesg. Noveau is blacklisted, at least that's what modprobe.d/nvidia.conf says (previous post)

I'll make sure to get the X log next time it happens (I've spent a couple hours on Plasma 5 without crashes so far).

Re: [SOLVED] Random segfaults when using Qt5 apps

Well, my luck ran out just now.
Here's the X log with a backtrace. It happened when I clicked to open a video file in dolphin (opening mpv)

Re: [SOLVED] Random segfaults when using Qt5 apps

This stack has also been found here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=221871 Initial findings point to a fault in xf86-input-wacom in combination with Xorg 1.19 You might want to try and uninstall that (or explicitly create a config so that it is used explicitly by the wacom driver without libinput also attempting to grab the device), as libinput should support wacom tablets

I'm marking this solved, thanks V1del!
