[Solved] Xorg ignore my Displaysize setting

I had a 19'' monitor with 1440x900 resolution, but with

$ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
screen #0:
  dimensions: 1440x900 pixels (381x238 millimeters)
  resolution: 96x96 dots per inch

This is apparently wrong, since my monitor has dimension: 410x260 (mm)

And then I create a new file named 90-monitor.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ (using solution here) with content:

Section "Monitor"
  Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
  Identifier "Monitor0"
  DisplaySize 410 260
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
EndSection

But xorg is ignoring my setting in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf, the result of xdpyinfo remains same.

Where did I do wrong? Thanks for any input...

Since I use intel integrated card, so the xorg's log is in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log, and it's content is:

Edit, for clarification: remove the screen section, you probably don't even have a Device with that ID.

Since I use intel integrated card, so the xorg's log is in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

That's not the reason at all, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#General

Re: [Solved] Xorg ignore my Displaysize setting

Hi, @seth, your solution works after I change the ID of monitor to what

xrandr -q

tells me, thank you very much!

But my story goes on...

I switch to nvidia GPU and keep the conf file there; with nouveau, the configuration takes effect, while using nvidia's proprietary driver, it doesn't work.
I also tried to parse the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log myself, but can't figure out sad (forgive me for that)...

The output of

xrandr -q

is:

$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1440 x 900, maximum 16384 x 16384
VGA-0 connected primary 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 410mm x 260mm
   1440x900 59.89 + 74.98*
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x960 60.00
   1024x768 75.03 60.00
   800x600 75.00 60.32
   640x480 75.00 59.94
DVI-D-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf (this is the only file there):

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VGA-1"
    DisplaySize 410 260
    Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "CRT-0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "screen0"
    Device "CRT-0"
    Monitor "VGA-1"
      SubSection "Display"
      Depth 24
      Modes "1440x900"
  EndSubSection
EndSection

Finally, the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log is:

$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 15.060] (--) Log file renamed from "/var/log/Xorg.pid-537.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log"

I set the device ID CRT-0, because the log recognize it as CRT-0. I've also tried something else like device0, NVIDIA Card, but no effect at all.

The log output says:

    16.168] (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1440 x 900
[ 16.174] (**) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (89, 87); computed from "DisplaySize" Monitor

So, the driver has set the DPI to the right one, but why the output of xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution sticks the old one (96*96)?

Thank you for any further input.

BTW, why the arch wiki on Xorg doesn't the mention the monitor's ID naming convention? I think it is better to add this bacause it takes time for people to dig this out.

Re: [Solved] Xorg ignore my Displaysize setting

$ xrandr -q
...
VGA-0 connected ...
$ xrandr -q
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VGA-1"
...

There should btw. be no reason to provide a screen section nor to add a virtually mute nvidia device section (unless you have multiple VGA devices ie. an intel and an nvidia VGA in lspci)
You could however add sth. like

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf (the idea of the xorg.conf.d thing is to keep unrelated things apart)

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default nvidia Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
        Option "CoolBits" "24"
        Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
        Option "DPI" "100x100"
        Option "UseEdidDpi" "False"
# find more options in /usr/share/doc/nvidia/README
EndSection

The randr/identifier linkage is mentioned in "man xorg.conf" no idea about the wiki, but it would belong into a "how to configure monitors" paragraph, not the resolution one.
Feel free to update the wiki.

Re: [Solved] Xorg ignore my Displaysize setting

@seth, I tried as you to told me: add extra configuration in section device, but takes no effect.

And I found something interesting, after remove all the conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, nvidia still knows the real and right dpi, displaysize of the monitor, the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log after remove all conf files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is:

It seems that nvidia driver has calculate the right DPI of the screen, also set it to the right one. But why xdpyinfo not aware of this. I think maybe some setting override the nvidia's dpi setting (I am using GNOME DE, so maybe it is Xorg or GNOME doing this?).
I've no idea who does this, can someone help me out of this situation. Thanks very much.
