mpd - Various problems make playing audio impossible.

I know that the title of this thread is a little vague, but sorry, it's the best I could do.
That's because I've tried multiple ways to get mpd to run and none of them work.
After properly configuring both mpd and ncmpcpp as described in their respective wiki articles, and enabling and starting mpd via systemd produces the error "config: Found database setting without music_directory - disabling database".
This makes it so when I try to use ncmpcpp and press 'u' to update the database, in the bottom left-hand corner it reads "MPD: no database" despite the fact that the database file specified in the mpd.conf file exists, and I can even access it normally through the filesystem, such as with ls commands.
I found that part the most confusing in this issue.
So after a little bit of google searching I tried a few suggestions and none of them got me anywhere, until I read about using systemd --user enable, rather than just systemd enable.
But whenever I use that, I new problem crops up--when I start ncmpcpp, it says "connection refused" as if mpd were not running at all!

Have you setup your music directory, with rw access to mpd?

As a side note: it would be easier to run mpd as user as compared to using global settings.

Yes, I have.  The problem with the database still occurs.
When I run as a user, as explained, that problem doesn't happen, but instead I cannot access mpd from ncmpcpp.
It says "connection refused".
Does a normal account on Linux require some sort of change to access the proper port?

let us choose one of the options, say running mpd as user
1. have you created .config/mpd/mpd.conf ? If yes post it's contents.
2. stop/disable your systemd service, for mpd
3. simply start "mpd" from your terminal, if there are no errors, start "mpc" or "ncmpcpp" post if there are any errors.

2. it is already disabled

3. ncmpcpp says "no active MPD connection" and "connection refused".  I have already verified that the address and port in the ~/.ncmpcpp/config file are correct.

Nope.  Doesn't help.  Still get "connection refused".  Even if I run mpd from the terminal emulator.
EDIT: Also, I made a config file (after backing up the old one) with the script you linked.  I get the same error that I did when originally running mpd as a systemd unit, system wide.  That is, the database file exists, but mpd says it doesn't.

mpd --no-daemon --stdout --verbose

and your ncmpcpp conf.
