[Solved] Gnome brightness controls stopped working

Sometime in the last few days, brightness controls in gnome stopped working. Neither the slider nor the keyboard keys work. Directly writing to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness works though. I seem to remember that the max_brightness values were different recently, but I'm not sure.

Arch linux is up to date, meaning that I run gnome 3.22.2. My laptop is a Dell XPS 13 9343.

Does anybody know what's going on or how to troubleshoot further?

Re: [Solved] Gnome brightness controls stopped working

For some reason I didn't think of looking at system logs at first. Running journalctl revealed an error:

gnome-settings-daemon.desktop[6383]: Error changing to home directory /root: No such file or directory

Recreating the /root/ directory fixed the issue.
