[SOLVED]Errors on booting after update from 4.9.11 to 4.10.1

Hello community,

So I updated my distro recently and the next day, I couldn't access my window manager. I can still use the ttys but that's it.
While booting, the first thing that I saw was a failure of the systemd-modules-load-service: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.

$ systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service

You are booting the old kernel. Does your /boot lie on a separate partition? It's possible that you have installed the kernel into /boot without the boot partition actually being mounted there, and now you boot with the partition mounted (or the other way around).

Yes, my boot partition is on sda1, whereas sda3 is my root partition(sda2 is my swap partition). But sda1 is automatically mounted on /boot via my fstab file. So shouldn't an update leading to rebuilding the kernel still be able to copy the files to my boot partition?

Ok, I tried rebuilding the kernel with mkinitpcio -p linux while having sda1 mounted on /boot, but after reboot I was welcomed with a warm EFI stub: ERROR: Failed to read file. So I re-did it and also rebuild systemd-boot with bootctl install(well, I added the path-option but since it's on /boot anyways, it didn't have any impact). However, that still didn't do the trick. Seems like I messed up more than I thought in the past...

Yes, it should. The only explanation I can think of is that for some obscure reason, the partition was not mounted when pacman performed its upgrade - or it simply failed to upgrade the kernel image in /boot for some other reason.

Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with UEFI or systemd-boot, so I fear I have to step back and wait for someone more knowlegeable to help you sad
I would probably try to figure out if the 4.10.1 kernel is anywhere at all. Have you checked the content of /boot on /dev/sda3? That is, without /dev/sda1 being mounted in there?

Oops. I have to correct myself: I THOUGHT my fstab file had all the partitions declared to be mounted correctly. Turns out, I was wrong: sda1(the boot partition) was NOT in the file. That's why I had to manually rebuild the kernel after a kernel update the last few times.
HOWEVER: The problem still persists.

PS: Yes, I also checked the boot directory on both partitions. I copied the latest content to the other one, just to make sure I really can boot. Sadly, that didn't help...
I'm reinstalling all the kernel-related packages I can think of - maybe one of them messed with the boot directory. But that still wouldn't explain(to me) why I get this ugly EFI-error...


EDIT: So I did just that - reinstalled linux packages, additionally updated packages via pacman in general and now after reboot, the EFI error is gone and I can access the ttys. But there's another problem: Even though the lightdm service is running, the screen on TTY7 is completely blacked out. Maybe that's connected to the nvidia updates I did in combination with the kernel updates, days before. Ugh... I think I'll write another thread in the laptop section here, because the error when booting are now mostly gone. By mostly I mean the only error I still get is a netctl error which tries to initialize an ethernet connection which isn't connected. So unless someone thinks that's still ugly and I must change it, I think this thread has served its purpose well.
