Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

You have an Optimus system, if you intend to keep using the intel card to drive your display in order to save power and only use nvidia for specific applications you should read and follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

If you want to use your nvidia card specifically for everything you can adjust your xinitrc or the configuration of your display manager and add the two xrandr commands as outlined in (since recently you don't have to do the Xorg config file anymore) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … y_Managers

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

It tells you at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … ing_nvidia

"First, install the NVIDIA driver and xorg-xrandr. Then, configure xorg.conf. You will need to know the PCI address of the NVIDIA card," etc

That is not necessary.

Just install nvidia, xorg-xrandr and follow the instructions in the link provided by V1del, and now me:

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

thanks for reply guys..

@olegabrielz xorg-xrandr was installed , i installed nvidia and after reboot everyting is ok but i see one error while starting the systems on booting. it was somthing like "failed to load kernel module"..
anyway..
i do followed steps on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … y_Managers and after reboot everything is ok.

but it still using skylake graphics..
what i should do now? smile

** updated **

@paulkerry i have no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 directory.. i created that and i setted BusID for that.. after reboot.. it freezed on booting step after starting graphical system i think..
i was lucky to can log into tty mode and remove that xorg.conf file and after reboot, that error gone..

What information did you use to determine that?
Please post the the systems xorg.log for the files location see Xorg#General
Please post the files you created/modified for the display manager the system uses.
Please also post the output of

$ xrandr

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

There is no mention of the nvidida kernel module in the dmesg output and no kernel module is trying to use the discrete GPU so that explains why the integrated GPU is still being used.
What is the output of the following

$ lsmod | grep nvidia
$ pacman -Qkk nvidia

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

What is the output of the following now the nvidia module is loaded

$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"
$ lsmod | grep nvidia

Also have you blacklisted any modules?

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

This should check if the module is blacklisted ( not certain though )

# modprobe -r nvidia #unload the nvidia kernel module
# modbrobe -bv nvidia #try to load the module again but checking blacklists

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

Missed this from the output of `pacman -Qs nvidia`

local/bumblebee 3.2.1-15
    NVIDIA Optimus support for Linux through VirtualGL

If bumblebee was enabled that may explain the issue.
Edit even if bumblebeed was not enabled the installation of the package on the system is enough to cause this issue

$ bsdtar -xf ~/Downloads/bumblebee-3.2.1-15-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
$ cat usr/lib/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf
blacklist nvidia
blacklist nvidia-drm
blacklist nvidia-modeset
blacklist nvidia-uvm
blacklist nouveau

So the bumblebee package was providing the module blacklisting I was looking for.
Check the status of bumblebeed.service

$ systemctl status bumblebeed.service

If it is enabled/active disable/stop the service

$ systemctl disable --now bumblebeed.service

Uninstall the bumblebee package.

Re: [SOLVED] installing nvidia driver on my asus laptop

hey loqs,
thanks for trying to help me

i checked this:

$ cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf :
the output was exact samething with what you write here
blacklist nvidia
blacklist nvidia-drm
blacklist nvidia-modeset
blacklist nvidia-uvm
blacklist nouveau

and also i checked bumblebee service, it was disable and i uninstalled it.
also i edited gdm custom.conf file and i do uncomment this line:

WaylandEnable=false

after reboot, i have GeFoce GTX 960M in my gnome settings->details->graphics..thanks a lot my friend.

nvidia_modeset    794625      1    nvidia_drm
nvidia                  12197888   1    nvidia_modeset
