Lengthy "file open" dialogue times

Can anyone explain why my dialogue boxes for opening files with gnome/gtk apps take tens of seconds whilst kde ones are much, much quicker?

In the first case, the disk light stays on all the time its looking for the files to list.  It happens for both root and normal users.

This is whilst using xfce4.

Re: Lengthy "file open" dialogue times

Try upgrading gnome-vfs. There are some conflicts with older and newer GTK libraries that make loading the file dialog take forever. As you probably already know, this effects Firefox and OpenOffice as well as "standard" GTK programs.

is loopback enabled? is your hostname in /etc/hosts?

Re: Lengthy "file open" dialogue times

Loopback and hosts are correct, and gnome-vfs upgrade didn't change anything.

The recent big upgrade seems to have reduced the delay significantly so maybe there was a package "out of sync".

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.
