I was using my laptop to do some audio recording w/ a USB audio interface (via jack2dbus + ardour), and afterwards any audio that is processed with the onboard chipset is distorted/clipped as if it is turned up too loud. I have recorded with this setup a few times in the past with no issues.
Have tested 2 different external USB soundcards, and audio is fine thru those (thru jack, pulse and alsa).
Taking jack out of the chain, I've tried turning down volume with both pulse and alsa directly to no effect. Have run thru a half dozen other threads on the boards + the wiki, but they seem to be related to no-sound issues.
Running kernel 4.10.3-1-ARCH w/ Dell BIOS revision A11

Would love to learn what to look for, instead of just reformatting to fix

I am now experiencing this same issue (same laptop 9343). Did you manage to resolve this? The onboard sound was working fine a few days ago, I'm sure an update has changed something to cause the audio to get distorted but I'm having trouble identifying what change has caused this regression..

I have no idea what that even means. What do you mean by "processed"? If other audio sources (your music collection, youtube...) plays fine through the onboard audio jack, that means it's the USB audio interface not working fine. If the no audio plays fine through the onboard audio jack, that means it's your onboard audio having hiccup, then why do you need to "test with 2 external USB sound card" or even mention anything on USB?
Or is it a capture-only USB audio interface, so you have to use the onboard audio jack for monitoring?
