[Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

Hi,

I use Arch from 2 months and I use vmware.

Yesterday, I updated arch and now, vmware doesn't start.

Here the log file => https://pastebin.com/tEPGiWDM

U can see a problem on line 93 => 2017-03-30T10:42:16.638+02:00| appLoader| I125: Unable to dlopen libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 on the system.  /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1: version `ZLIB_1.2.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libpng16.so.16)

The current version on zlib is 1.2.11 on my system, I tried to find 1.2.9 version for downgrading but I didn't found this package version.

Any clue ?

What version of vmware do you have?

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

It's in the log => 12.5.5 build=build-5234757

The release date is 28 march

This morning I was on 12.5.2 (with the same problem)

Edit : I downgraded with success zlib et minizip to 1.2.9 but I have still the same error. sad

Edit2: That wasn't de zlib but libpng, I downgraded to 1.6.28 (instead of 1.6.29) and vmware work.

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

Hi

Today i update to 4.10.6-1 and my vmware 12.5.5 stop working, if i check the log:

"2017-03-30T20:17:14.867+02:00| appLoader| W115: Unable to execute /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-modconfig."

i tried to follow this instruccions:

vmware 12 process terminates immediately after start, no GUI is launched

Registered bug at Mageia, but it seems that there are no error messages shown in terminal with arch. When inspecting the logs, which are in /tmp/vmware-<id>, there are  VMWARE_SHIPPED_LIBS_LIST is not set, VMWARE_SYSTEM_LIBS_LIST is not set,  VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS is not set, VMWARE_USE_SYSTEM_LIBS is not set issues. Process simply terminates with Unable to execute /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-modconfig. after vmware or vmplayer is executed. Solution is the same, as root do:
# mv /etc/vmware/icu/icudt44l.dat /etc/vmware/icu/icudt44l.dat.bak
Also there is a workaround:
# export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS='yes'

from: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware

However its not working

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

Hi harkor

i think is this: libpng16.so.16, if i check the log i can get this:

2017-03-30T20:17:14.699+02:00| appLoader| I125: Unable to dlopen libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 on the system.  /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1: version `ZLIB_1.2.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libpng16.so.16)

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

U just need to "downgrade" to previous version like I said previously.

U can do this with "sudo pacman -U /var/cache/packman/pkg/libpng-1.6.28-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz"

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

Hello. I downgraded to libpng-1.6.26-2 and still it does not work (of course I tried the recommended version here also).
Also: lib32-gtk2 was downgraded, gtk2, zlib,lib32-zlib, lib32-png. All the libraries that contained files mentioned in the log were downgraded.
Does anyone have more suggestions?
Also tried to reinstall vmware.
I will try to use Arch Archive to rollback all packages.

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

Sure.
You can find it here: https://pastebin.com/yVaYQNbk
The relevant text (maybe):
2017-04-01T21:08:38.207+03:00| appLoader| I125: Loading system version of libcurl.so.4.
2017-04-01T21:08:38.207+03:00| appLoader| W115: Unable to load libcurl.so.4 from libcurl.so.4: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libstdc++.so.6/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.8' not found (required by /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.58)
2017-04-01T21:08:38.207+03:00| appLoader| W115: Unable to load dependencies for /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libvmware-modconfig.so/libvmware-modconfig.so
2017-04-01T21:08:38.207+03:00| appLoader| W115: Unable to execute /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-modconfig.
vmware version=12.5.5 build=build-5234757
I reverted to 14th of march. Before this date there were problems with some display driver library.
Before downgrade the log was practically identical to yours... exactly the same problem.

Most likely related to vmplayer fails to start from version 12.5.3 section noted in the ArchWiki - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

I managed to start vmware after downgrading to 14th of march.
Just needed to do this also:
mv /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libstdc++.so.6/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libstdc++.so.6/libstdc++.so.6.bak

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

mweisel is right. That command was found on wiki. Also... after marking as ignored the following packages
IgnorePkg   = lib32-libpng libpng
I was able to update all the packages.
I do not know why it didn't work just like harkor said (just downgrade libpng).
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts.

Re: [Solved] Vmware - Launch problem (zlib version ?)

Best solution is to delete the outdated zlib copy that comes with VMWare. If VMWare wants to ship private libraries, it should ship all libraries, not just some and link to system libs afterwards.

VMware do ships the required libraries. The fact is we just need to tell the binaries where to find them.

In http://mihamina.rktmb.org/2017/07/vmwar … expat.html I loop in "/usr/lib/vmware/lib/" and "/usr/lib/vmware-installer/2.1.0/lib/lib/" then append all found directories in the "LD_LIBRARY_PATH"

That made it for me.
