How do I use an XDG trash directory on a network filesystem?

The XDG trash specification states that every filesystem root should have a '.Trash' directory for holding files that were deleted from that filesystem. This directory contains subdirectories that keep each user's files separate, where the name of the subdirectory is the uid of the user (i.e. '.Trash/1000'). I want to know how to share a trash directory between multiple machines using SSHFS. Only one user will be accessing the files, but they will likely have a different uid on each machine. SSHFS automatically translates the uid of the connecting user to the uid that owns the files in the filesystem, so the user will have read/write permissions for the trash directory, but their file manager will only display files from the trash directory that matches their uid. I tried creating symlinks for each connecting uid (e.g. ln -s '.Trash/1000' '.Trash/1001'), but that doesn't work with some trash implementations (PCManFM is one of them).

I saw some suggestions on the XDG mailing list for how to tackle this problem with filesystems like FAT and NTFS that don't support Unix permissions, but apparently nothing has come of it. If anyone has a workaround for this problem, I would love to hear it.

I tried using a bind mount, and that didn't work either.
