I just have a preliminary question before I embark upon trying to get dvd::rip to work. Has anyone successfully used it with AL? My question stems from the fact that it's reeeealy finnicky about everything and I've had problems installing it on every distro I've ever used.

unless you are prepared to make packages for quite a few gnome 1.4 packages (i think this would ivolved practically making the whole of 1.4).
transcode can be found in the unofficial trees if you are comfortable using cli for ripping dvds. (recent versions of libdvdcss and libdvdread are there too.
