Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 (and others) fan at max speed after resuming

Hey Arch Linux fellows,

got my new X1 and instantly installed Arch Linux on it. So far EVERYTHING works without any problems at al. So big thumbs up from me!

Only problem so far: The fan speeds up to around 7000 rpm after resuming from standby. It doesn't happen always, but still about 60% of the times I resume. And for some reason it always helps to remove the AC plug, go to stanby and resume. After that the fan speed is just how it should be (0 rpm).

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 (and others) fan at max speed after resuming

UPDATE:
I found this bug on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191181 and it seems as this bug not only affects the X1 17, but also other ThinkPad models, like the X270, and the Txxx series.
And it seems like this bug was not present in kernel version 4.8.
It looks like the they're still trying to find the cause of the problem in order to fix it. So if you have the same problem and you can contribute to find a fix, I would encourage you to do so.

Would it make sense, to edit the Wiki page for the thinkpad lines, running into the same error?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 (and others) fan at max speed after resuming

I have the same issue. Thank you for sharing the information above. The kernel.org link proved useful, as it mentions a possible workaround.

I have downgraded the kernel to 4.8.13 and it seems to work so far.

Instructions here. Packages here.
Look for:

linux 4.8.13-1
linux-firmware 20161005.9c71af9-1
linux-headers 4.8.13-1

I hope it helps those having the issue. I'm considering updating the wiki page. For the moment I have only asked in the discussion.

I got the same mode - do you have the latest BIOS update? I am running linux 4.10-3 and have absolutely no problems regarding fan speed!

This bug affects my T470, too.

Downgrading to 4.8.13 indeed "solves" the issue as a temporary solution... Thank you for the links!Source

Update:
I've compiled and tested Linux 4.12.0 RC2, because thinkpad_acpi (among other related things...) is mentioned in the list of changes for this kernel RC.
Unfortunately without success, the 'fan on full speed after suspend'-problem still persists.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 (and others) fan at max speed after resuming

A fix for this issue should be in the next 4.12.4 and 4.9.40 (I guess) kernel updates.
