How to show different things on two different screens?

I remember a friend had a laptop where he could be doing whatever he liked on the computer while having a movie on the extrnal screen (or tv or whatever). I have this RGB > VGA convertor and would like to have such a big screen that I can move left-and-right to focus on different sides of the screen. Then (which is the most important) I need to have the extrnal screen fixed but the regualr one movable. Is that possible?
