ArchMap reborn

Many of you remember the ArchMap project. xterminus isn't maintining the maps any more, so I decided to revive the project. I created a script that imports the ArchMap data to Google Earth and made a .kmz file available for download. The script isn't perfect yet, but it sort of works. I will try to improve it and suggestions are always welcome.

If you want to be listed, please add yourself. I will update the file regularly.

Probably the right way to go with this, but I'll have to pass - my laptop almost had a stroke when I tried Google Earth.

I won't correct all the coordinates. I already corrected some US guys who put themselves into China because they did the coordinates wrong.

Re: ArchMap reborn

Very neat project. I like the idea to incorperate it into google-earth and now that the project has a linux version I no longer have to wine it tongue. Very fun to see where everyone is about. I see a ton of little Arch logo's now xD

Re: ArchMap reborn

*BUMP*

There hasn't been much activity lately and there are many people who don't know about it. So spread the word to those who haven't heard of it.

And please: If you have your coordinates in ArchMap, then check them for correctness. If they are wrong, either correct them or delete yourself.

Re: ArchMap reborn

hey all,

I see the last 20 users or more (including me and even our new archlinux logo contest winner) are in the wiki list,
but not inside the .kmz file.

brain0 would you mind checking your script or is this thing dead ?

i checked the .kmz file inside your home folder

archmap.kmz             30-Sep-2007 12:49   20K

the wiki page and the kmz are out of sync ...
how is this updated and could you check it please ?
I can help out if you want to delegate some work
big_smile

thx & bis bald !

Re: ArchMap reborn

There is a script that updates the map, but it is not run automatically. I should take care of that. However, I just updated the map.

+1,  great idea, If you're interested to see another example, a bbc radio 4 evening news program "pm" did the same thing with their listeners.

Re: ArchMap reborn

I offcially live in a field in the middle of fenland! big_smile

For some reason on the wiki my longtitude and latitude are correct 52.252.2713 0.0235 "gazj"
but on google earth they are coming out slightly south at  52.16.11671 0.01.2460

Strange! big_smile

Re: ArchMap reborn

For anyone not sure how to convert the google earth coordinates into the format which seems to be used on the wiki:

The pointer location in google earth is in the following format:

The first number is latitude and the second is longitude. Both are shown in the degrees minutes seconds format.

Latitude ranges from 0 degrees at the equator to 90 degrees at the north pole and -90 degrees at the south pole. Note that google earth does not show negative numbers, instead negative is indicated as SOUTH.

Longitude ranges from 0 degrees at a line which passes through Greenwich, England to -180 degrees to the west and 180 degrees to the east. Again negative numbers are not shown on google earth (Negative to the WEST).

Note that it looks like you must use the negative/positive notation on the wiki entries instead of N,S,E and W.

For both Latitude and Longitude, degrees are split into 60 minutes. Each minute is split into 60 seconds, and seconds are split into hundredths of a second.

To convert from google earth format to the wiki format:

degrees + (minutes * 60) + (seconds * 3600)

Take note of the North, South, East and West directions. South and West result in negative numbers.

I hope this helps someone out - I couldn't even remember which was latitude and which was longitude to begin with smile

Same thing happens with my coordinates. Instead of the south of Germany I end up in Switzerland, although I entered my coordinates correctly...

I also found this site: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html pretty handy in putting coordinates in. smile

Yeah, I updated mine a month or so ago to reflect that fact that I don't live in the ocean.  You should set that script up to run weekly or something brain0 smile
